Refund for Incorrect Fees
You may complete an Application for Refund of Certain Fees – State Form 56165 if you believe you have paid an incorrect fee to the BMV. (Examples include but are not limited to: administrative penalties, speed title fee, or renewing a vehicle in error.) This application may only be used to apply for refunds of incorrect fees. Do not use this form for refunds of vehicles or watercraft you have sold, destroyed, disposed of, or registered in another state (see the Excise Tax Credit/Refund Request section below).

- Electronically (preferred method);
- OR -

Excise Tax Credit/Refund Request
You may apply for a credit or refund of a portion of the taxes you paid on a vehicle or watercraft you owned if you have sold, destroyed, registered in a different state, or otherwise disposed of that vehicle or watercraft. The application for a tax credit or refund must be submitted by mail. Download the correct form below and follow the instructions provided on the form.
