The Indiana Educator Fellowship for Creative Teaching is a partnership between the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Education. The Fellowship for Creative Teaching supports non-arts educators with robust training, funding, and a community of experts to inspire and implement creativity-centered innovation in the classroom.
Research shows creative teaching strategies, also known as arts integration, improves student engagement, student learning retention, and student literacy skills.
Integrating the arts into core subjects like reading, math, and science is a highly effective and rewarding approach to meeting standards while reaching diverse learners, engaging students, and making a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
Selected Creative Teaching Fellows will gather with their like-minded educator peers who are also looking to grow their teaching practice in innovative ways. After exploring what creativity in education can be in theory during the summer training, all Creative Teaching Fellows will collaborate with their Community Arts Partner to bring a professional, in-person artist residency in their classroom in the Fall semester to see the work in a real classroom setting.
Creative Teaching Fellows Receive:
- Two days of immersive training in creativity and connections to standards
- Access to a fully funded in-school creative arts residency
- Support from community creative partners, experts, and professionals
- Membership in a statewide community of energetic, innovative educators
- A $1,000 honoraria

Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a licensed educator employed to teach any grade K – 12 during the 2023/2024 school year. (Special exceptions may be made through an IAC staff approval process)
- Must be employed by a school operating in Indiana during the 2023/2024 school year.
- Must be employed by a public school, public charter school, or accredited nonpublic school
- Be an Indiana resident and remain a full time Indiana resident through the end of the fellowship period.
- Must be over 18 years of age
- Must be a US citizen
*This program is not as beneficial for teachers who primarily teach arts classes
Unfortunately, this opportunity excludes:
- Educators who teach exclusively at Colleges, Universities, or Higher education institutions
- Non-licensed educators (unless approved by IAC staff)
- Pre-k educators
- Substitute educators not contracted for a full school year
- Educators with temporary or emergency licenses
- Educators who work exclusively out-of-school time (afterschool, summer)

The Summer Institute for Creative Teaching is a training workshop for Indiana educators. Through hands-on experience and collaboration with peers, participants will learn effective and innovative teaching strategies to implement in their classrooms. The program includes engaging artistic activities and opportunities to explore how creative teaching can enhance curriculum. This training will occur in conjunction with the training for the Indiana Educator Fellowship for Creative Teaching.

| Mrs. Mason and Mrs. Mapes' English 11 classes from Eagle Tech Academy spent time studying the theme of "community" through the reading, analysis, and discussion of various texts ranging from song lyrics, films, short stories, non-fiction articles, works of art, and even excerpts from novels. During the spring semester the junior English learners will host an artist residency with Kassie Woodworth, a visual artist from Indianapolis. Together students, facilitators, and resident artist will collaborate to plan, design, and sew a class quilt sharing their insight, experiences, and beliefs surrounding the theme of "community", with each student working in a small group to create their own quilt square. Students will be pull from both our readings as well as personal experience, and Ms. Woodworth will assist students in developing their concept as well as instruct and guide them in various techniques they could use to create their quilt square. Upon completion the quilt squares will be sewn together, finished, and displayed publicly along with an eBook with written explanations. | This semester, Childs School Second Graders will welcome local artist Lydia Amos as a Resident Artist during their library experience with Dr. Frye. During weekly engagements, Lydia will teach us about the art form of book design; help us make our own paper; design illustrations that correspond to our written words; and also bind our creations into a book. After the completion of the books, second graders will work together to plan and promote a community exhibition called the "Young Authors & Illustrators Fair" to share our stories with others. During the month of February 2023, the Kindergarten of David Turnham Education Center in Dale, IN will host a residency partnership with dance artist Carolyn Randolph of Jasper, IN. Randolph will meet with students weekly to teach beginning dance, movement, and body control principles. Through this partnership, students will also be focusing on Kindergarten Reading Standards, Spatial Awareness, and Indiana Employability Standard of Self-Confidence. At the end of this partnership, students will present and celebrate their learning for the student assembly, coinciding with Read Across America Day.
