[SENATE DEMOCRATS] Governor signs Deig's 'truth in music advertising' legislation
Start Date: 3/13/2008 All Day
End Date: 3/13/2008
Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS - Legislation authored by State Senator Bob Deig (D-Mount Vernon) to keep Hoosiers from being misled by music advertisers was signed by the governor today.

Senate Enrolled Act 192 creates a truth in music advertising statute by prohibiting the advertising or conducting of a live musical performance if the performers falsely or deceptively imply a connection to an earlier group.

"I'm pleased that governor signed this piece of legislation," said Deig. "He understood that it is important for the consumers because they deserve to know what they are paying for and it is important for the artists because this deception is a form of identity theft."

Deig had been approached by Jon "Bowzer" Bauman, the former lead singer of the band Sha Na Na, who is leading the effort to pass legislation similar to Deig's throughout the country. Currently 18 states have this law.

The legislation makes each performance or production of a musical advertised in violation of the law a separate violation. It makes a violation of the provision a Class A infraction. The maximum judgment for a Class A infraction is $10,000.
