Monroe Lake Earthcache Challenge

We're celebrating Earth Science Week at Monroe Lake! Since Sunday, October 13 is International Earthcache Day, we kicking off a week-long Earthcache Challenge today! Earthcaches take you to specific locations (using GPS coordinates) and encourage you to explore and learn more about what you find there. 

To complete the Monroe Lake Earthcache Challenge, you will need to visit five earthcaches near the lake that highlight our local geological features. 

Everyone who successfully completes the challenge will be entered into a drawing for a 2020 Indiana State Parks Annual Entrance Pass!

Requirements: You need to have/create a FREE account on in order to access the earthcache information and participate in this challenge. You also need either a smartphone (enter the earthcache's GPS coordinates into a mapping app to get driving directions), or a stand-alone GPS unit and a digital camera.

Earthcache Challenge Instructions
  • All five earthcaches in the challenge must be visited between October 13 and 19.
  • Visit each earthcache's webpage and read about the location. Using the GPS coordinates and site description, travel to and physically locate each of the five earthcaches.

  • Take a selfie at each earthcache.

  • Answer the questions about each earthcache (they are included on the webpages).

  • Email the selfies WITH your answers to the earthcache questions to Submit each earthcache as a SEPARATE email, with the earthcache's ID in the subject line. All five emails must be submitted by Sunday, October 20.
(Optional: If you want to officially log the earthcache on, follow the instructions on the earthcaches webpage, in addition to submitting them to jvance.)
