Paving to Begin on I-70 in Henry County

HENRY COUNTY – Contractors are nearing completion of patching operations on Interstate 70 between State Road 3 (New Castle Exit 123) and State Road 109 (Knightstown Exit 115) and will begin milling and paving after the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Beginning tonight at approximately 8 p.m., crews will restrict the right shoulder and right lane of eastbound I-70 approaching State Road 3 to install drainage pipe. Crews plan to end restrictions by 7 a.m. Thursday.

Crews plan to begin removing the existing surface and paving an intermediate layer of new asphalt on eastbound I-70 on Monday, July 7. Recurring overnight lane restrictions on eastbound I-70 should be expected between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. for approximately two weeks. Additional restrictions can be expected on westbound I-70 as crews complete patching and install drainage. Once patching and drainage is complete, an intermediate layer of asphalt will be placed on westbound I-70. A new surface layer will then be paved on both directions between State Road 3 and State Road 109.

E & B Paving, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractor for the $7.7 million project, is expected to complete all work on the 7-mile section of I-70 by November. All traffic lanes in both directions are included in the contract. All lane restrictions are expected to take place during weeknights and weekends. Additional highway work zones and lane restrictions can be expected on I-70 in Hancock and Wayne counties. For information on INDOT work zones and highway restrictions, go to or call toll-free 800-261-ROAD (7623).

Motorists are urged to practice safe driving habits, especially in and around work zones. Follow speed limits, maintain safe distances from other vehicles and avoid all distractions—including cell phones. The Indiana Work Zone Safety Law sets steep penalties for driving infractions within highway work zones. INDOT partners with the Indiana State Police to provide increased patrols and promote public safety in work zones. For more information on work zone safety, go to
