River Organizations


Banks of the Wabash, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, enhancing and promoting the significant historical and natural resources of the Wabash River Corridor. Banks of the Wabash, Inc. works to improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the visitor experiences for guests from outside the corridor. They cover 8 counties along the Wabash River.

Environmental Education


Hoosier Riverwatch is a state-sponsored water quality monitoring initiative. The program was started in 1994 to increase public awareness of water quality issues and concerns by training volunteers to monitor stream water quality.

The Rivers Institute at Hanover College will serve as a world-wide educational resource for promoting integrated research, teaching, learning and planning for all aspects of river-centered ecosystems, economies and cultures. It will conduct research and studies, offer forums that address issues, provide consultative services and disseminate educational resources through conferences, electronic communications and continuing education.

The Bone Bank archaeological site located on the bank of the Wabash River in far southwestern Indiana, is a late prehistoric (protohistoric) Native American village site. Early in the period of historic European settlement, the site became famous because of the burials that eroded from the site on the cutbank of the river, as well as the many artifacts that were collected. In fact, the Bone Bank site became a landmark for early river travelers in the early 1800s.

The Minihaha Foundation is a nonprofit organization. Their charter is to stimulate advancements in Science and Education. Scholarships and grants have been available since the fall of 2001. They also conduct their own research and field activities. Their first project is related to Paleontology in Northeast Indiana.

Land Trust Organizations


"NICHES" stands for "Northern Indiana Citizens Helping Ecosystems Survive." It is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation formed in 1995 by a diverse group of concerned people acting to protect natural spaces in the face of increasing sprawl. It recognizes that a strong economy and a continued high quality of life in our area of Indiana is ultimately dependent upon and related to the state of our environment.

Mr. Beamer. a fifth grade teacher at Southwood Elementary, Wabash County, gave his students a river adventure. He traveled down the Wabash River, the Ohio River, and the mighty Mississippi, to Memphis in a canoe. The goal was to see how healthy the rivers and watershed were.

Indiana's 92 Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) fund and provide leadership for IASWCD, Inc. their state association. Incorporated in 1968, the IASWCD operates from Indianapolis. It provides legislative leadership, and fundraising, development, and training opportunities to its districts.

Purdue Extension is a service tailored to meet the needs of Indiana. Their educators, specialists, and volunteers live and work in all 92 Indiana counties. They provide the link between Land Grant research and Indiana citizens.

Along the Wabash River, near Battle Ground, Indiana, just north of Lafayette, Indiana Museums At Prophetstown (MAP) is dedicated to preserving and interpreting Woodland Native American and Wabash Valley agricultural history, culture, and traditions; to restoring examples of Indiana's prairie and savanna ecosystems; and to sharing these treasures through educational experiences and cultural programs.

Author of Ouabache Adventure – Canoeing the Wabash he and his 10-year-old grandson had an adventure-packed 500-mile trip canoeing down the Wabash River. From Fort Recovery, Ohio, they dragged the canoe through the shallow, upper Wabash, fought raging rapids, and survived a 14-hour thunder-lightening storm. At night the pair camped and fished along the banks of the river. They encountered deer, raccoons, muskrats, rabbits, beaver, gars, and pileated woodpeckers during their 16-day journey along the still-wild river. After paddling one-quarter-million strokes, they finally reached their destination--the Ohio River.

Located in Vermillion County, near Perrysville, the Skinner Farm Village is a collection of original log cabins, buildings, round barn and artifacts which represent over 150 years of local Indiana history. The site has been in the Skinner family for this period of time, and has been assembled through over 30 years of collecting, preservation and research. Opened as a museum over 22 years ago, the village is now on the web, and expanding to give classes, programs, shows and educational programming for a larger audience.

The River Friendly Farmer (RFF) Program, sponsored by IASWCD, Office of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Indiana Farm Bureau, Purdue's Cooperative Extension Service, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, is a statewide initiative that will recognize farmers who, through good production management, are helping protect Indiana's rivers, lakes, and streams.
