More to do than you ever knew

Green Spaces and Outdoor Activities

There are many areas for walking, hiking, biking, and even rollerblading in White River State Park. In addition, it also has many public green spaces, historic structures and recreation areas. Take advantage of all the Park has to offer!

Night Concert at the Lawn

The Governors Lawn
Experience live entertainment at one of the region's newest outdoor performance venues. You'll enjoy lawn seating overlooking the White River during more than 10 music concerts each summer featuring nationally known artists. With seating for 5,000, this is the perfect place to listen to music under the stars.

Dr. Frank P. Lloyd Sr. Visitors Center
Need help during your visit to the Park? Want to buy a Park pass? Stop at the Visitors Center where there's a Park and city concierge, brochures, gift shop, maps and public restrooms. Located in the heart of the Park, food service and patio dining are available seasonally.

Central Canal
Walk, jog or skate along this waterway that runs from the White River through the Park. From the Park the canal heads east and then north to 11th Street. Be serenaded on your gondola ride, or if you're more athletic, rent one of the pedal boats during the summer.

Military Park

Military Park
Toss a Frisbee, walk your dog or simply settle into the grass in this 14-acre greenspace bordering Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Although it was a Civil War encampment and home to the first state fair, the park drew its name from its shape - like a military badge. Military Park is home to many Indiana festivals and events.

Bicycle Rental
Pedal the Park on a bicycle or share the ride with the whole family on one of Bike Indy's unique surreys. Surreys and bicycles for adults and kids can be rented from a kiosk between the Indiana State Museum and the NCAA Hall of Champions. Maps, helmets and locks are included in the rental cost.

Waterfront
Jog, walk or run along a series of paths and pedestrian-safe bridges. Along the way, you'll enjoy river overlooks, a covered picnic area and benches. The waterfront paths connect to the city's award-winning greenways trail system.

River Promenade
You'll feel as though you've found a secret passage as you wander along the promenade. Look for the hand-carved "rose window" and renderings of famous buildings in the Indiana limestone. A half-mile walkway lined with flowering trees and evergreens, the promenade offers unusual views of the White River and the city's skyline.

Celebration Plaza

Celebration Plaza, Amphitheater and McCormick's Rock
This landscaped greenspace and terraced amphitheater is the perfect place to relax while gazing at the city skyline. The Totem sculpture you'll find is the creation of American sculptor Rinaldo Paluzzi. You also can check out the 17-foot waterfall where the canal meets the White River. Just above the waterfall is the rock symbolizing the former site of John McCormick's nearby cabin where Indiana's founding fathers met and decided to move the capital from Corydon to Indianapolis in 1824.

Old Washington Street Bridge and Sculpture in the Park
Built in 1833 as a part of the National Road, this bridge is now a pedestrian crosswalk linking the Zoo, Gardens and Promenade to the attractions on the east bank of the White River. The bridge also is the home to the biannual sculpture program, which began in 1999 to showcase Indiana artists and make art accessible to visitors of the Park. The sculptures are for sale.

Sculpture in the Park information

Pumphouse
The restored 1871 pumping station provided the first public water service for Indianapolis. The Pumphouse is home to the Park's administrative offices. To the west of the Pumphouse overlooking the river is a small pavilion that contains a memorial to Michael Carroll, Frank McKinney Jr., Robert Welch and John Weliever, four civic leaders killed during a 1992 Park business trip.
