Southern Indiana rocks
Start your trip in Bedford at Bluespring Caverns . Take a boat tour on the country's longest navigable underground waterway and travel through caverns 100 feet below the earth's surface. Visitors can also enjoy activities above the ground such as mining for gemstones, fossils and arrowheads.
Just off of U.S. Highway 50 in Shoals stands the incredible natural geological sandstone formation known as Jug Rock . The 60-foot tall formation stands alone with no adjacent ledge and is one of the largest free standing table rock formations in the United States. Other sandstone formations in the area include The Pinnacle, House Rock and Beaver Bluffs.
When in Shoals, don't miss the stunning Overlook Park . High above the winding White River, the park provides picturesque views of the river bottom, farms and valleys below. A shelter house and picnic areas are available.
Up for a ski trip? Take US 150 to Paoli Peaks in the town of Paoli. Enjoy a day of skiing, tubing and snowboarding. This attraction is only open from December to March, weather permitting.
Head to Marengo, home to Marengo Cave , a U.S. National Natural Landmark. Marengo Cave offers cave tours, gemstone mining, canoeing, campgrounds, picnic areas and walking trails. The cave has been open for tours since its discovery in 1883.
Enjoy a meal in Leavenworth at Overlook Restaurant . The restaurant offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Ohio River valley.
In Clarksville, visit Falls of the Ohio State Park . Travel back to a time when Indiana was covered by a salt water sea as you explore the world-renowned fossil beds that date back 400 million years. The interpretive center features exhibits on geology and history, an aquarium and a full scale mammoth skeleton.
