About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

The Indiana dunes may be the best "homegrown" attraction in Northwest Indiana, but quite a few local artists, restauranteurs and chefs have created their own homemade specialties that deserve equal consideration and provide behind-the-scenes insights at how things are made.

Take a swing like a major league baseball player
Baseball enthusiasts and those who love them will want to start the trip with a visit to the Hoosier Bat Company , the third largest manufacturer of regulation quality wood bats in the world. Set up an appointment to take a guided tour of the facility and hold a bat destined for a major league swinger. You can even order your own customized bat to start setting records of your own.

Embrace your creative side
Satisfy your inner artist at the Collective Edge , where local artists and interactive community art projects are the focus. Student-led tours of the small gallery are offered as you enter and guests are encouraged to participate in hands-on community art installations while in the facility.

Dine like a local
After creating a masterpiece, both children and adults deserve a special treat. The whole family can witness incredible ice cream made from scratch at Valpo Velvet . Call ahead to take the guided tour, then indulge in an ice cream novelty.

Adults can head to Figure 8 Brewery , a small craft microbrewery with a tasting room open Thursday-Sunday. Tours of the facility and brewing process led by the owners are also available upon request.

Preschedule a wagon tour to meet a herd of more than 70 American bison at the family-owned Broken Wagon Bison Farm . Take the opportunity to buy food that is locally grown and truly native to this landscape.

Finish the day with a current selection of locally grown, fresh ingredients in the simple yet imaginative dishes at Valley Kitchen & Bar . Their menu highlights the geographic source of the ingredients used in each dish. The restaurant is sure to satisfy every appetite, from vegan to carnivore.
