About this trip idea
Escape with the kids to the small towns of Southern Indiana, where family-friendly festivals let you laugh, play and enjoy time together.
All American family fun
At the end of June, join Rockport to commemorate our 16th president at the Abraham Lincoln Freedom Festival . Explore the Lincoln Pioneer Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to discover what Lincoln's formative years in Indiana were like. Interact with the reenactors, play games and partake in yummy festival foods! The evening ends with a patriotic concert and a huge fireworks show.
Make it a special summer
Pack up the lawn chairs and make your way to Derby's Cedar Valley Bluegrass Festival in July. The best of traditional bluegrass music comes to the Cedar Valley stage for three days - many of the genre's greats have performed at the festival through the years. Enjoy the plucking of guitars and melodic voices at this family-friendly tribute to the music of the South. Check out local talent during open stage night and eat and talk with Hoosiers at the community dinner.
Experience German heritage like never before at Jasper's Strassenfest in August. You will encounter all things German, like lederhosen, polka music and bratwursts - the Schnitzelbank's Bratzel, crowned Indiana's Best Sandwich in 2012, can also be found in Jasper! String music, polka bands, rock groups and a capella doo-woppers set toes a'tappin', and caricaturists and balloon artists delight the kids with their talents. Gather for a vintage baseball game, played as it was in 1863, or sip delicious draughts in the beer garden.
Spend Labor Day at Lyles Station New Beginnings Celebration near Princeton. Lyles Station was formed in the 1840s as a settlement of freed slaves, and nearly half of today's residents are descendants of the original settlers. Visit the grounds of the Lyles Station Historic School & Museum to celebrate Indiana's last remaining African-American settlement, which is also a historic landmark. Tour the historic school and museum, take a horse or wagon ride, and encounter exotic animals courtesy of Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden. Watch concerts, puppet shows and demonstrations by local artists and craftsmen, and be sure to feast on delicious barbecue prepared on-site!
