About this trip idea

A place of unique heritage and delicious flavors, South Central Indiana is home to one-of-a-kind festivals that add an extra burst of excitement to your summer. Spend the warm months on a festival tour, indulging in what makes South Central Indiana unique.

Historic spirit

In June, learn about the weaponry used in earlier times at the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association's Spring National Shoot   in the town of Friendship. Glimpses of the past can be seen throughout Friendship as you stroll through a Native American settlement and a museum displaying antique rifles. Watch marksman from around the world compete in shooting contests with everything from muzzle loading rifles to modern guns - then the tomahawk and knife throwers vie for top honors. Enjoy crafts, period music, living history demonstrations and lessons at the youth range to round out the week.

On the water
On the shores of the Ohio River, spend an action-packed July weekend at the Madison Regatta  . Scoot onto the edge of your seat as boats and hydroplanes zoom across the water in a town with more than 100 years of boat racing history. Between races, catch air shows, fireworks, concerts, a parade and a car show. Get in the groove at the Street Dance or cheer on the firefighters during the exciting and unique Waterball Fight!

Taste the tradition
The flavors of summer explode in your mouth at Madison Ribberfest BBQ & Blues  in August. At this neighborhood cook-off, sample ribs of all varieties as amateur teams fire up their grills and compete for bragging rights. Let local and national blues and rock musicians entertain as you eat and enjoy a relaxing afternoon gliding down the Ohio on a paddle wheel riverboat.

Indulge in refreshing local wines at Vevay's Swiss Wine Festival  in August, a celebration of the area's Swiss roots. For $25, two can sample the creations of 13 local wineries in the Wine Pavilion. Don't miss the legendary Grape Stomp, where you can participate in the traditional practice of crushing grapes with your feet! Let your Swiss side emerge as you watch polka dancers, sample foods like pork schnitzel and apple strudel, and take a dinner cruise at dusk.

The people of Columbus take pride in their Scottish heritage - and they show that pride in September during the Columbus Scottish Festival . Discover all things Scottish, including highland dancers, sheep dogs, bagpipers and Scottish country dancers. Watch as athletes in kilts test their skill and strength in the Highland Games, the modern adaptation of a traditional Celtic competition between neighboring clans. Visit the clan tents to discover the area's Scottish ancestry and watch a medieval jousting match! Try yummy Scottish foods like haggis puffs and hoagies, and take home some Celtic swag!
