About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

Tune out the noise of everyday life in Dubois County , where you’ll experience the simple pleasures of rummaging through antiques, tasting extraordinary local foods and exploring the rural landscape.

Treat your tongue and your shopping crave
For a true dose of charm, visit Ferdinand’s  recently restored Monastery Immaculate Conception , one of the nation’s largest communities of Benedictine women. Tour the breathtaking domed church with its hand-carved wooden pews and columns while you learn about the history of this stunning “Castle on the Hill." Try to find all 89 exquisite angels scattered throughout the sanctuary in sculptures and stained glass. Wrap up your tour in the monastery’s For Heaven’s Sake gift shop and Simply Divine Bakery, where the Sisters make authentic German cookies. Their buttermint with chocolate cookies—made with real mint leaves—are a cookie lover’s dream!

Shop until you drop in the more than two dozen antique and specialty shops on Huntingburg’s Historic 4th Street , housed in 19th and early 20th century Victorian and Italianate buildings. Take a break to enjoy a latté made with fresh coffee beans at Cool Beans Café, then continue your spree at Gehlhausen’s Flowers, Gifts & Country Store or any of the other unique shops along the brick-paved street to find one-of-a-kind pieces for your home.

Get carried away by a train and a trail
In Jasper , board the Spirit of Jasper  train for an excursion to French Lick, Indiana, to have fun in the casino and tour the area. The scenic Southern Indiana countryside will roll by as you ride in exquisitely decorated, temperature-controlled cars, some dating back to World War I and World War II. If you don’t have time for a day trip to French Lick, enjoy an 18-mile round-trip “Ride & Dine” excursion and satisfy your taste buds with dinner in the dining car catered by the Schnitzelbank.

Get a breath of fresh air on Jasper’s Riverwalk, a 2.1-mile walking trail through scenic wooded areas and farm fields along the Patoka River. Stop at the Jasper City Mill to see the workings of the waterwheel and browse the gift shop. Indulge your shopping crave a little further in Jasper’s nearby Downtown Shopping District, filled with vitality, history and a variety of exciting shops.

Feast on local German cuisine
Make yourself at home by staying at the quaint Powers Inn Bed & Breakfast  , just a few blocks from Jasper’s historic Courthouse Square. Original wood floors, a mansard roof and antique furnishings enchant on the site of what was once a log cabin inn.

Complete your trip to Dubois County with a stop at the Schnitzelbank  , Southern Indiana’s authentic German restaurant. Indulge in the German Sample Platter or the Bratwurst meal, voted Indiana’s best sandwich during the 2012 Super Bowl. Don’t forget the delicious dessert selection, including apple strudel, German chocolate pie and coconut cream pie!
