Just north of Indianapolis and miles from ordinary, the town of Carmel in Hamilton County offers a mix of urban edge and suburban ease with an eclectic mix of fine arts and antiques, world-class performing arts, a variety of eateries and a little room to move about whether it’s on two feet or two wheels.
Crème of the Crop - Arts Style
The Carmel Arts & Design District , in the heart of Old Town Carmel, is one of the Midwest’s premier arts and design destinations. The District is home to a variety of local artisans, including interior designers, art galleries, showrooms, restaurants, antique stores and a variety of specialty retail shops. No matter the artistic taste, the area provides a unique artistic approach for an array of art lovers. One such place is the Indiana Design Center . The Center presents a premier collection of interior design associations, shops and art for both the public and design community. Explore a variety of showrooms to gain insight and inspiration for your own home - there are also in-house design services offered for the public to help guide you in the right direction.
The District streets are lined with local eateries that range from cozy bistros and spicy Cajun to the Man vs. Food made-famous burger joint, Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream . Known for fresh, hand-pattied burgers with buns custom made to fit the burger, Bub’s is sure to serve up a burger for any appetite. Attempt the impossible and order “The Big Ugly,” Bub’s one-pound burger (after cooked) that will have your taste buds buzzing. Go further and pursue The Big Ugly Challenge - the more Big Ugly burgers you eat the bigger the reward! Oh, and don’t forget the ice cream - Bub’s is renowned for their ice cream creations.
Cruisin’ and Relaxing
Jump on the Monon Trail through town. It’s a great way to work off that burger. Great place to bike, run, walk and skate. The trail extends south of Carmel all the way to downtown Indianapolis - 16.7 miles total, 10 in Indianapolis alone. Bicycle rentals are available at Carmel Cyclery right off the Monon Trail to further explore the city on two wheels.
In the evening, head to The Center for the Performing Arts , providing three state-of-the-art venues for appreciating the arts - the Tarkington, Studio Theatre and the Palladium. Enjoy performances ranging from local theater, dance and musical groups to international orchestras, recitals, vocalists, chambers and dance companies.
