About this trip idea

Allow 1-2 days.

Just South of Indianapolis along Interstate 65, lies the community of Columbus, a one-of-a-kind destination for art, culture and history enthusiasts. This community boasts architecture splendor rivaling that of major metropolitans - like New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. - while offering great small town charm for an unexpected and unforgettable getaway.

Architectural Dream Come True
Your journey begins at the Columbus Visitors Center with a two-hour narrated tour of Columbus' architectural wonders. Ranked 6th in architecture innovation and design in the nation, the community showcases 70 buildings and public art pieces by top international names like I.M. Pei, Eliel and Eero Saarinene, Dale Chihuly and Richard Meier. New architectural and public art installations occur annually tantalizing visitors to come again and again.

The Miller House and Garden, a recent donation to the Indianapolis Museum of Art , has undergone extensive renovations to restore it to its original architectural style of the 1950's. Regarded as one of the country's best examples of mid-century Modernist residences, the home became a National Historic Landmark in 2000-one of five in Columbus. Tours of the home begins at the Columbus Area Visitors Center. After the tour, shop the gift shop for unique gifts made by many Indiana artisans.

Grab a bite to eat at Zaharakos a restored 1900s Ice Cream Parlor. The parlor offers sandwiches, salad and delicious fountain treats. Try the local favorite a Green River float. Then, browse the downtown shops - Lockett’s Ladies, Baker’s Fine Gifts, Art in the Heartland Gallery and the newly renovated The Commons Mall.

Stay at the Inn at Irwin Gardens . Built in 1864, the Inn offers the five spacious guest rooms each with its own sitting room and private bath. Wander the two-acre estate's exquisite maze garden and awaken to a mouthwatering breakfast served in the formal dining room.
