About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

As you follow the Creative Spaces Rural Places  artisan trail through Ohio County   and Switzerland County , your creative juices just might start flowing. Travel along the scenic Ohio River and escape into a world of artistry.

Soak up culture in Rising Sun
Downtown Rising Sun is the heart of the arts in Ohio County. As you stroll the streets, be sure to find the Pendleton Art Center  , which houses a complex of artist studios. You can see artisans working in all types of media and styles before exploring the main gallery, which frequently changes exhibits. Just down the street from the art center, you’ll find two designated Indiana Artisans  creating and selling their wares. William Rees has been handcrafting harps for 37 years, and 10 years ago he opened Harps on Main  , where you can watch their creation and hear the result of beautiful craftsmanship. A few doors down at MAiN ARTeRY Gallery  , Vera Curnow invents with colored pencils. She makes a fascinating line of note cards called Attitudes of the Chronologically Mature and draws on commission. Watch her sketch or purchase her colored pencil guide if you’re interested in learning the medium.

Stretch your legs at Backyard Orchard  . Breathe in the Southern Indiana air as you traipse through the trees picking apples, pears and peaches to your heart’s content. And of course there’s nothing like eating the fruits of your labor as you bite into a plump peach or a juicy pear! On the bank of the Ohio River, quaint historic charm meets modern convenience at the Empire House Historic Hotel  , one of the oldest hotels in Indiana. Relax on the porch and gaze at the river or stroll the riverfront. For a special treat, request a private river view room!

Art and nature in Vevay
Drive southwest along the Ohio River Scenic Byway  to Vevay, another enchanting stop along the trail. Here you will find two Indiana Artisans, Jerry and Sandra Wallin, creating very different works at Wallin Forge  . Jerry crafts beautiful traditional Windsor chairs. He has created his own woodworking tools and paint color in order to fashion the chairs exactly as they were 200 years ago. His wife Sandra is a tinsmith, crafting intricate historical reproductions from the metals.

In the evening, catch a show at the Historic Hoosier Theater  . This 1837 federal style building truly comes to life with each moving performance.

Then, head to Belterra Casino, Resort and Spa  in nearby Florence for a good night's sleep. Start the day with 18-holes on their beautiful Tom Fazio designed championship golf course that winds through the tree-lined rolling hills. The full-service spa provides a full day of treatments from pedicures to body wraps. Shop in the promenade and enjoy seafood creations at the Aquarium Café, featuring a 60’ aquarium.
