About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

Get away and enjoy the serenity of nature in Southern Indiana. Follow the Azalea Trail as it takes you from the great outdoors to the quaint small towns, including the site of an 1800s utopian society.

Get Back to Nature in Gibson County
The Azalea Path Arboretum and Botanical Gardens
is the perfect place to start along the Azalea Trail. This magnificent 50-acre retreat displays more than 300 varieties of azaleas. Walk through the flowers, relax by two spring-fed lakes and marvel at the unique chainsaw sculptures. Although most azaleas bloom in mid-April to mid-May, a large variety of other plants are in bloom providing floral beauty throughout the summer. In nearby Princeton, interact with nature at Lafayette Park  , the next stop along the trail. Enjoy a picnic by the pond, catch your own fish or splash in the pool. Search for the beautiful azaleas that bloom within the park.

Explore the History of Southern Indiana
After relaxing at the park, head into downtown Princeton to find the azaleas planted at the Gibson County Courthouse  . The courthouse is a stunning example of nineteenth-century architecture in Indiana. Built in 1884, its Romanesque revival style is reminiscent of another time and place. Southeast of Princeton, you will find the historic town of New Harmony . Start your walking tour at the Atheneum/Visitors Center with a film introduction to New Harmony conception. Discover the philosophy behind this 1800s utopian society by exploring the log cabins, a Victorian doctor's office, an opera house and gardens. Be sure to look for the azaleas.

New Harmony offers wonderful overnight accommodations at the New Harmony Inn  . The Inn's quaint rooms, modern amenities and delicious cuisine are sure to be a palate pleaser.

Spend a Day at USI
Make the University of Southern Indiana   your final stop on the trail. Explore the modern building landscape as you hunt for azaleas.
