About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

Imagine fantastic animation where a cozy quilt transforms into a beautiful bed of flowers. No need to imagine, however, for such a place is quite real in northern Indiana on its one-of-a-kind Quilt Gardens Tour !

Quilt Gardens Tour makes a delightful drive
The seven communities comprising northern Indiana’s Amish Country band together to create blooming quilts for you to enjoy. From Memorial Day through end of September, Quilt Gardens Tour will showcase gardens and murals along the 90-mile Heritage Trail Driving Tour that winds through Amish Country. Each garden/mural is juried and accepted by a committee of master gardeners, horticulturalists and professional landscapers. The 90,000 blooms used in the designs are locally grown. At each garden or mural you can get more of the story behind the creation of the pattern via the onsite storyboard or via audio utilizing your own cell phone.

The Heritage Trail Driving Tour takes you down rural highways, country lanes and charming main streets. Pick up the free Heritage Trail Driving Tour CD at the Elkhart County Visitor Center or other participating vendors along the route. Or download the mp3 version from their website before you go.

In Nappanee, visit Amish Acres Historic Farm and Heritage Resort . This 80-acre resort offers a variety of activities that will keep you busy from sunrise to sunset. Tour the old-order Amish farm; enjoy their famous Thresher’s Dinner served in a hand-hewn restaurant barn. Then, see a show at the Round Barn Theatre.

In Goshen, the Old Bag Factory is a turn of the century factory turned shopper’s paradise. Home to several artisan studios offering pottery, quilts and furniture.

In Middlebury, the garden at Das Dutchman Essenhaus is the place to be. Enjoy a delightful Amish meal and then settle in for a good night's sleep at the inn. Your family-style meal will include favorites like broasted chicken, roast beef, made-from-scratch noodles, bread with apple butter and your choice of 30 varieties of pie. The Village Shops include home accents in Dutch Country Gifts, Christmas ornaments in The Cabin, women’s and children’s fashions at The ClothesLine, and, of course, handmade coziness at The Quilt Shop. The Essenhaus Inn offers 89 generously sized rooms decorated in an old-fashioned style along with modern conveniences.
