About this trip idea
Allow 2-3 days.
Find outdoor fun all year around in Northeast Indiana near Angola. This lake lover’s paradise and home to Pokagon State Park will keep you coming back for more.
Getting wet is optional
The same glaciers that formed the Great Lakes during the Ice Ages left behind a vast collection of lakes in Northeast Indiana – 101 of them! It’s no wonder this area is known as Northern Indiana Lakes Country . Some of the smaller lakes restrict boat speeds, making them perfect spots to try catching bass, blue gill and walleye. Lake James, the largest lake in the area, is popular with all water enthusiasts with open areas for boating and quiet coves for fishing. The larger lakes such as Lake James, Clear Lake or Lake George allow high-speed boating and are popular tubing spots and you’ll find plenty of public access sites to drop your boat or jet ski. There are also a variety of streams and rivers amongst the lakes where kayaking and canoeing are popular. The Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area is a particular favorite of nature lovers. It is a slow-moving river making it easy to spot wildlife and it is an official release spot for river otters so keep your eyes peeled for these playful creatures. Bring your own boat or rent a canoe from Pigeon River Canoe & Camp .
While in the area, venture to Captain’s Cabin on Lake James, offering a something-for-everyone menu for lunch and dinner. Plus, unparalleled views of water!
A State Park with character
Pokagon State Park is probably best known for its old-fashioned toboggan run. It’s the only refrigerated, two-track run in the state, and when you zoom down its quarter-mile toboggan track you’ll reach speeds of 35-40 miles per hour! The toboggan run operates all winter starting Thanksgiving weekend, but the activities don't stop there. In the winter, you can also sled, snowshoe and cross-country ski. The park also offers hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, horseback riding opportunities and more based on season. A visit to Pokagon State Park isn’t complete without a stay at the Potawatomi Inn . The Inn is affordable, rustic and centrally located to take full advantage of all park offerings.
