About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

Put aside obligations, appointment books and yes, even laundry then grab your friends to shop, eat, explore and bond in Northern Indiana’s Amish Country.

America’s third-largest Amish settlement
Indiana’s Amish Country roughly extends from Elkhart to LaGrange, and an excellent way to start exploring this area is on the Heritage Trail Driving Tour. The tour is a 90-mile loop that leads you along rural highways and through friendly small towns to the region’s most popular restaurants, shops, inns and attractions. Pick up a free audio CD guide of the tour at the Amish Country Visitor Center, The Farmstead Inn in Shipshewana, Inn at Amish Acres or The Nappanee Chamber.

Flea Market discoveries and more
Everybody loves a bargain, and you’re sure to find one at the Midwest’s Largest Flea Market in Shipshewana . Held every Tuesday and Wednesday, May through October, you can find hundreds of vendors selling everything from fresh fruit to hand-built furniture to classic antiques. You’ll have a great time discovering one-of-a-kind finds and handcrafted items - and each purchase made supports the local crafter community. In the evening, head to the Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery , for family-style goodness like pressure-fried chicken and Amish noodles. Save room for a slice of pie – there are 25 different pies to choose from! After dinner, catch a show in the upstairs theater.

It all comes together at Amish Acres
In Nappanee, Amish Acres  depicts Amish family life that has been in this part of the state for generations. Tour the Amish farmstead, located on the National Register of Historic places, then walk the grounds to take in the gardens and barn areas. Hop in for a horse and buggy ride, experience a thresher’s dinner in the Round Barn Restaurant and take in a Broadway show in the Round Barn Theater.  At the end of your busy day, the Inn at Amish Acres awaits with genuine Amish charm. You’ll especially enjoy taking in the fresh country air from the rocking chairs on the front porch. They make just the right spot for sharing some laughs, relaxed conversation and memories about this wonderful getaway.
