About this trip idea

The best of outdoor adventure and big-city fun come together in Indy!

“Go Ape” at Eagle Creek Park

You’ll feel as if you’re miles away from the city as you zip through the woods at Eagle Creek Park on Indianapolis’ northwest side. Go Ape! Treetop Adventures opened its first course in the Midwest in 2012. The course includes five ziplines plus numerous rope ladders with 39 crossings including challenges called Log Balance, Flying Carpet and Tic Tac Toe. Do your best ape-man call as you try out the two Tarzan swings, which take you into a net wall. The course is split into five sections. As you advance from one to the next, you’ll go higher into the forest canopy, sometimes swinging as high as 50 feet above the ground. Plan on two to three hours for your Go Ape! adventure.

When you are ready to come down from the treetops, explore the rest Eagle Creek Park has to offer. Picnic and playground areas abound. Six hiking trails cover 10 miles within the 3,900-acre area. Learn about the local wildlife at the nature center. Enjoy the beach during the summer months where you can play beach volleyball, swim in the lake or slide into the water from the Plunge Harbor Attraction. Rent a sailboat, canoe or rowboat at the Marina, open from May to September.

Roll Some Fun with Duckpin Bowling

Move your adventure indoors in historic Fountain Square when you roll a few games at Action Duckpin Bowl or Atomic Bowl Duckpin. This old-time version of bowling – with smaller pins and a smaller ball you hold in your hand – is available just minutes from downtown Indy! The fourth-floor Action Duckpin Bowl is restored with authentic 1930s vintage bowling equipment, a 1918 pool table and early 1900s bowling memorabilia. The lower-level Atomic Bowl Duckpin is decorated with 1950s and 60s bowling equipment, pool table and vintage jukebox.

Zip Through White River State Park and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum

Ride the elevator high above the Indianapolis skyline when you overnight at the JW Marriott downtown. You can’t miss the blue-glass building soaring 33 floors – the tallest hotel in Indiana. It’s just steps away from White River State Park, home to the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indiana State Museum, the NCAA Hall of Champions, an IMAX Theater and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Take in all these sights as you zip around the park on a Segway Tour, ending with a scenic trip around The Canal, downtown’s picturesque waterfront. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner with a view of the same canal when you eat at the unique Creation Café, housed in the former Buggs Temple. Sit on the balcony or inside the colorful restaurant where you will choose a signature salad, entrée, flatbread or perhaps the Southern Style BBQ Sandwich, included in the Super 46 Sandwiches competition in Indiana. Zip on up to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, just a quick five miles from downtown. See the 75 vehicles on display, including the Marmon “Wasp,” winner of the inaugural Indianapolis 500®. You’ll also see the famed Borg-Warner Trophy, timing and scoring equipment, and a movie including rare historic footage. Track tours may be available.
