About this trip idea

Allow 2-3 days.

Looking to relax and discover your artistic side? Meander through quiet streets and charming shops in the small towns of central Indiana. Friendly artists, cozy cafes and peaceful galleries reveal the heart of Indiana along the Rural Routes to Main Street  trail in Hendricks County , just west of Indianapolis.

The route less traveled
Step inside an 1890 house, where a world of yarn awaits. Aspiring fiber artists can learn the craft of knitting, crocheting, spinning, dyeing or felting while curled up in a comfy chair at Nomad Yarns  . In the yarn shop, find locally spun yarn of all colors and varieties, fiber waiting to be spun, and all kinds of knitting needles and notions. If you're not the crafty type yourself, purchase knitted and crocheted items handmade by local artisans or unique knitting needle jewelry.

At Confection Delights   in Danville, you might not know whether to admire or eat the art - so do both! Just off the courthouse square, delicious turtles, truffles, cherry cordials and cake pops satisfy your cravings. In addition to traditional treats, the bakers design amazing edible art, including chocolate shoes and gummy worm apples. Purchase by the pound or individually - but don't forget to admire before you taste!

Enjoy afternoon tea, lunch and a good book at The Porch . In this quaint tearoom, sandwiches, soups, salads and chicken pot pie are made from scratch using the freshest ingredients available - even the bread is made from flour milled by the owners. Sip from a selection of more than 40 teas, then finish off the meal with a slice of fresh blueberry pie. After you fill up, browse the book collection in search of rare finds and out-of-print titles, then curl up on the porch swing with a cup of tea and a good read.

The art of rural
Discover your green thumb at Frazee Gardens  in Brownsburg. Find the perfect annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs for your home, along with beautiful landscaping accessories, artistic pieces and gardening advice. Learn the art of the vegetable garden and get started with yummy heirloom tomato and other vegetable plants - or purchase their fresh, locally grown produce to enjoy right away. Photography, carvings, paintings and more made by local artisans and carried inside the shop will spruce up the inside of your house.

New and seasoned art lovers will enjoy the diverse collection of realistic landscape paintings, detailed miniatures, contemporary mixed media collages, metal sculptures, fiber art and more at Artistic Designs Gallery . Explore the work of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, or learn to sketch, paint and more in classes for every artistic level, from children to talented amateur adults. If you already own a piece you love, bring it with you and let the gallery's custom framer enhance its beauty.

Nature mingles with high-class art at the Art Gallery at McCloud Nature Park   in North Salem. In the midst of a lush, 232-acre park, the Nature Center offers a bird viewing area, greenhouse, interpretive exhibits and interactive programming - and delightfully, an art gallery with permanent and monthly art displays inspired by nature. Trek through 6.5 miles of woodland and prairie trails to see natural beauty firsthand, then admire artists' interpretations of nature in the gallery.
