Taltree Aboretum & Gardens

This beautiful 360-acre oak preserve of formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands, and prairies offers a variety of events, classes, and exhibits. This diverse landscape is home to many endangered and rare species. This dog friendly arboretum offers approximately 4 miles of hiking trails to stretch your legs. Formal garden displays include the Children’s Adventure Garden, the Taltree Railway Garden, Oak Islands, and the Native Plant Garden. Oak preservation is our mission. We have 91 of the 477 oak species from around the world, offering one of the most diverse oak collections in the world. The centerpieces of the preserve are the Bur Oaks. Another gem is the Railway Garden. The exhibit deliveries a meaningful story about United States railroad history during the Civil War, westward expansion, and the American Industrial Revolution. It features model trains and vignettes in a micro-climate garden of conifer and dwarf woody plants. Located in Northwest Indiana, Taltree is approximately an 1 1/2 hours from Chicago, half hour from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and 2 1/2 hours from Indianapolis. All proceeds received power Taltree’s restoration, conservation, and education initiatives.
