The Rising Sun Regatta will take place on August 16 and 17 this year. Races will begin at 10am and continue throughout both days so bring your blanket or lawn chair and plan to spend the day or weekend watching antique hydroplanes and tunnel boats race to the finish.Racing begins on Saturday morning with the power of the Ohio Valley Vintage Hydroplane Association’s vintage hydroplanes being hoisted into the river by cranes simultaneously for an exciting start for the heat. The afternoon begins with the roar and speed of the Powerboat Nationals’ outboard tunnel boats. This category of racing features some of the biggest and most powerful engines in Powerboat racing. Outboard performance craft travel on a less than a mile rectangle course averaging 115 mph, can start from a dead engine to 100mph in 6 seconds and turn up to 180 degrees with forces up to 5 G’s. These are the fastest turning boats in the world.The racing schedule will be the same on Sunday with the vintage hydroplanes in the morning followed by the OPC championship finals.This event is free to the public. The Rising Sun Riverfront is the perfect place to watch a race with its amphitheater seating and terraced walls. There will be food vendors and arts and crafts.
