Two One-of-a-Kind Communities - One Great Getaway

From historic architecture to great outdoor activities these two communities have everything you need for a great getaway.

Day One
Start your day exploring downtown Madison. This bustling rivertown has over 20 blocks of history building on the National Register of Historic Places and has recently been named a National Historic Landmark District. Stop by The Birdhouse Wild Bird and Nature Shop. A haven for nature lovers, The Birdhouse offers a unique shopping experience and indoor nature trail.

To get around town easily enough, hop aboard the Madison Trolley. Besides a cozy ride to your next destination Madison Trolley also offers themed tours such as Holidays, Underground Railroad, Scavenger Hunt and more.

Jefferson County Historical Society At the Jefferson County Historical Society learn the local history. Tour the Madison Railroad Station with artifacts and displays devoted to railroad history. Experience the "Year of the Child" at the Society’s Heritage Center. This hands-on exhibit allows children to play in 1900-period displays including a one room schoolhouse, general store and trading post.

For evening entertainment try Ten Pin Alley on Madison’s hilltop or All Ways Pottery to create your own Madison souvenir.


Day Two
Jefferson County Historical Society Head to Columbus, a community known for its outstanding collection of modern architecture. Start your day at the Visitors Center and take the Architecture tour. The tour explores the unique public art installations and building architecture.

At Kidscommons, Columbus’ community children’s museum, small visitors explore through hand-on activities such climbing up chimneys, sliding down toilets and learning about living a healthy lifestyle.

Go outside and play! Columbus' park system is one of the best. Run, walk or bike the 19-mile People Trail system, play-around at the new Freedom Field playground or practice your "figure-eights" at the Hamilton Center indoor ice arena.
