Outdoor Fun in Western Indiana, West Lafayette
It's a howling good time
Need a healthy dose of fresh air this fall? Ride a canal boat, visit with folks from the 1700s, howl with the wolves and learn about milk production at a local dairy farm.
Exploration Adventures
In Delphi, take a boat trip in a replica 19th century canal boat at the Wabash & Erie Canal Park. Your tour guide will share adventures and stories of everyday life from 150 years ago. Rides are available weekends through October 21. Learn more about canal days year-round at the Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center, a hands-on center where you can play the canal boat captain by guiding a miniature boat through the canal straits.
The Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, September 22-23, reenacts the annual fall gathering of the French and Native Americans during the early 1700s. Sample food, shop in the trading post, do traditional crafts and enjoy music. It all takes place in Historic Fort Ouiatenon Park in West Lafayette.
Animal Adventures
Just outside West Lafayette near Battle Ground is Wolf Park. Open daily through November, this nonprofit educational and research facility is home to several wolf packs as well as coyotes, foxes and bison. On Saturdays, they hold a special Howl Night where you can learn to howl with the wolves to become one of the pack!
About an hour north in Fair Oaks is Fair Oaks Farms, one of the largest dairies in the U.S., housing more than 30,000 dairy cows. Learn how milk goes from dairy cow to your glass on the Dairy Barn Tour. About 300,000 gallons of milk are pumped per day! At the birthing barn, see calves enter the world – about 80 are born each day. Afterwards, enjoy a sampling of their delicious made-onsite milk products in the Café. Then let the youngsters burn off steam in the Mooville play area jumping, rock climbing and riding the MooChoo train.
