Heritage Trail Driving Tour, Elkhart & LaGrange Counties
Slow down and enjoy Amish Country
The 90-mile Heritage Trail Driving Tour winds through Amish Country, taking you down rural highways, country lanes and charming main streets. Pick up the free Heritage Trail Driving Tour CD at the Elkhart County Visitor Center or other participating vendors along the route. Or download the mp3 version from their website before you go.
In Goshen, the Old Bag Factory is a turn-of-the-century factory turned shopper’s paradise that’s home to several artisan studios offering pottery, quilts and furniture. At Kercher’s Sunrise Orchard, grab a basket and pick your own apples or stroll the pumpkin patch for the perfect jack-o-lantern.
In Nappanee, visit Amish Acres Historic Farm and Heritage Resort. This 80-acre resort offers a variety of activities that will keep you busy from sunrise to sunset. Tour the old-order Amish farm and enjoy their famous Thresher’s Dinner served in a hand-hewn restaurant barn. Then see a show at the Round Barn Theatre.
Stop in Shipshewana to stroll the shop-lined streets, where you’ll find handcrafted items, baked goods and the Midwest’s largest flea market. Treat yourself to a horse-drawn buggy ride or ride the restored 1906 carousel at the Davis Mercantile. The Fall Crafters Fair, held October 4-6, features artisans, quilters, carvers, painters, musicians and cloggers.
Enjoy a delightful Amish meal and then settle in for a good night’s sleep at Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury. Your family-style meal will include favorites like broasted chicken, roast beef, made-from-scratch noodles, bread with apple butter and your choice of 30 varieties of pie. The Village Shops include home accents in Dutch Country Gifts, Christmas ornaments in The Cabin, women’s and children’s fashions at The ClothesLine, and, of course, handmade coziness at The Quilt Shop.
