16th Street and Georgetown Road. This intersection in the western Indianapolis suburb of Speedway, Indiana is known internationally as the location of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the home of the fastest cars and most dedicated race fans in the world.

Now what about 10th Street and Lynhurst Drive? This intersection, mere blocks south of the mecca of automobile racing, deserves a similar kind of international fame, albeit for a different reason.

At this location sits none other than Mug n Bun. What is Mug n Bun you ask? Mug n Bun is none other than a 50 year old Indianapolis classic; it is a full service drive in restaurant. Yes, you actually can eat in your car!

For those hotter days, the drive in offers plenty of outside tables for customers wanting to enjoy the dine in experience, and if you’re really not interested in sweating it out, an indoor dining location is available for customers.

But enough about where you can eat; for me, and for most who visit the drive in, it’s about WHAT you can eat.

Although the name of the restaurant, Mug n Bun, might seem to offer some initial suggestions as to what to order, deciding what to drink out of your frosted mug and what to eat on your toasted sesame seed bun might prove to be a bit of a challenge, due to the extensive menu.

The Mug n Bun food menu boasts over 40 sandwich choices, including everything from their famous breaded tenderloin to pulled pork to pizza burgers to grilled cheese.

Their 27 sides range from the expected (fries and onion rings) to the slightly exotic (hot pepper cheese balls, breaded mushrooms, and my personal favorite, fried mac & cheese wedges.)

After conquering the food menu, the drink menu is another matter. Coke products (add extra flavoring!), root beer, malts, floats, shakes and milk threaten to bombard visitors’ taste buds, should they ever be able to make a decision.

For first timers, I suggest ordering a mug full of the drive-in’s famous root beer, although you can’t go wrong with a thick, creamy peanut butter milkshake.

As for the food, I’ve been coming to the drive-in ever since I was young, so I’m lucky enough to say I’ve been able to sample a good majority of the menu items, give or take a few.

E Everything is so good, I almost feel bad recommending what to try, but I’ll give it my best shot:

I promise you won’t go hungry if you order the breaded tenderloin. If you can finish it, I’ll be thoroughly impressed.

Tread lightly when ordering a double cheeseburger, they mean double. There’s even an extra piece of bread between the two juicy patties! I order mine with lettuce, onion, pickles and American cheese.

If you’re considering adding chili or cheese to your fries, just do it. You won’t regret it.

Trust me when I tell you, you can split a regular order of onion rings with at least one other person. Whatever you do, don’t order the family size portion, or you’ll have leftovers until you decide to visit again. (Then again, that may not be a bad thing.

Whether you take my advice or not, I promise you won’t regret making a trip out to Speedway, Indiana to eat at Mug n Bun drive-in. Whatever you decide to order, you will not be disappointed.

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your eating.

When exploring new restaurants to try in Indy, I love to seek out local pit stops from Food Network favorites like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. This weekend I decided to try out Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream, a community favorite located in the Carmel Arts & Design District, and a feature on the television show Man vs. Food. Bub’s is a locally owned and operated restaurant known for their succulent burgers and delectable ice cream.

The restaurant was featured on Food Network for their “Big Ugly” burger, a one-pound, fully loaded burger that customers frequently devour in order to have their photos placed on the walls of fame for “Big Ugly” conquerors. I opted for the “Settle for Less Ugly” elk burger, which was a juicy elk burger, perfectly cooked on a homemade bun. I’ve never tried elk, but it’s meant to be a healthier version of your typical burger, and it was just as tasty!

I also ordered a chocolate shake, which was thick, creamy and the perfect complement to the rest of the meal.

Since Bub’s is located right off of the Monon, it fills up quickly with hungry bike riders, speed walkers and families just exploring the Arts & Design District. So, get here early and get your picture up on the wall for eternal, “Big Ugly” glory!

After interning in downtown Indy for a year, I have “fall”en in love with Georgia Street. Georgia Street lies at the heart of Indianapolis’ historic Wholesale District. It was completely revamped before Super Bowl XLVI and transformed into a unique, outdoor urban space.

Planning on coming to downtown Indy soon? Already live downtown? Here is a list of reasons why you will “fall” in love with Georgia Street this season.

Events: That autumn crispness has finally arrived, but that doesn’t mean you have to go inside.

Cheer on another season of the Colts at a Georgia Street tailgate! Enjoy food, drinks, corn-hole and good music before going to the game. Head on down Oct. 6 & 20 and Nov. 10 to the west block of Georgia Street. Bring the whole family or a big group of friends to share in the fun.

Enjoy the next few weeks of perfect weather by taking your meeting or meal outside. Food trucks will be lined up on the west block of Georgia Street near the Indiana Convention Center on Oct. 18 and Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. for Cluster Truck. Comfortable seating and overhead covers are provided on all three blocks of Georgia Street for you to take advantage of. Keep an eye out for my personal favorite food truck: Scratch Truck.

Tastes: Fall weather gives you an excuse to order some of your favorite food and drinks on Georgia Street.

Celebrate the start of fall by treating yourself to a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. The perfect blend of espresso, freshly steamed milk, whipped cream and spices will be the perfect start to your day.

After the Colt’s tailgate, take the crew inside to watch the game on one of the 32 high definition TVs at The Pub. With lunch and dinner specials, music and live entertainment, good times will be had by all!

Sushi is my go-to restaurant choice and it’s even better when I can sit outside in these enjoyable fall temperatures. Mikado Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar is located on the West Block of Georgia Street and offers awesome patio seating. The menu consists of traditional Japanese dishes, Sushi and French-Japanese fusion creations.

There’s no better way to celebrate fall than by enjoying a seasonal beer. Head over to the Tilted Kilt after a long day of work and try the annual Beer of the Month. October is the month to try the Samuel Adams Oktoberfest. This seasonal beer is the perfect transition from light summer ales to the rich, golden tastes of fall. I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s definitely on my list.

Shopping: With new weather, comes new clothes! Check out Circle Centre Mall on Georgia Street for all of your fall shopping needs. Some of my personal favorites include: Aldo, Banana Republic, Brookstone, Francesca’s, H&M, and Loft.

What’s your favorite part about Georgia Street? Next time you’re there, snap a photo and post it with the hashtag #downtownindy to share it with everyone!

Last week I wrote about my fantastic morning out in Danville (a small town just west of Indianapolis) and I promised that I would be writing again soon to tell you about how we spent the rest of the day. So here you go … a run down of all we enjoyed in Danville.

The town of Danville, similar to other county seats in the state, has a square in the middle of town where the county courthouse sits. Once upon a time the square would have served as the center of the area featuring towns, shops, restaurants, etc. Many towns are starting to revitalize their town squares and the result has made for wonderful visits! After we spent the morning at the Bread Basket Cafe and Bakery and then looked around the Hendricks County Historical Museum we decided to take a stroll around the square. You would be surprised how many shops you can find.

We started with Confection Delights. They specialize in gifts for weddings, showers, milestone birthdays and chocolate tasting parties. Her creations are truly amazing. Right next door is Gallery on the Square. Everything for sale in the store is locally made and produced. I was racking up the ideas for Christmas gifts here! Jewelry, clothing, handbags and art …In the back they even offer classes where you can try your hand at creating art. I am pretty sure they will even take novices like me.

We made our way across another city block to step into Carla’s Creations and Gifts. I wish I would have captured my daughter’s face when we walked in. Not only do they offer fudge and old-fashioned sodas, but they have a full array of kids toys and gifts. My daughter made me take pictures of items (with their tags showing) so I could put them on her Christmas list. No lie.One place I wouldn’t have thought to visit (and am glad I did) is the courthouse itself. The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid in 1913, with a dedication happening in 1915. Over the years the inside had fallen into disrepair. So in 2003, the interior was renovated to take the courthouse back to its original look and feel. I definitely recommend stopping by to see the detail inside. We detoured from the town square at this point (but don’t worry … we ventured back) to experience a glass blowing studio. A short drive outside of Danville there is a glass studio – Hot Blown Glass. Artist Lisa Pelo creates masterpieces by blowing and bending glass every which way.We were lucky enough to watch her give a personal lesson while we were there. I’m amazed at the intricate details they are able to make out of glass. Lisa welcomes visitors to her studio to not only watch her work, but also create work. Check out her website for details.

Afterwards we headed back into Danville to enjoy lunch at Mayberry Cafe. Ring a bell? It just may because everything about this restaurant is taken straight from the Andy Griffith Show. (Note the television that is constantly airing episodes!)Even down to the car outside! My daughter’s favorite part was given a coin to choose a toy at the end of the meal!Clearly a day full of adventure, shopping and of course more food than you can imagine!

It’s a 200th birthday party and you’re invited!

Vevay-Switzerland County is celebrating their Bicentennial on October 4-13, 2013 with activities and events for all ages. Dubbed the “Birthplace of the First Successful Commercial Winery in the United States,” Switzerland County is also where the Mormon hay press was invented and is home to the famous Swiss Wine Festival.

Vevay’s 200th birthday is a year before the 1814 founding of Switzerland County. Because the milestones are only a year apart, the Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial Committee decided to celebrate both occasions this year.

Several mini-events–gearing up to main events– have included Bicentennial-themed festivities such as the Bicentennial Swiss Wine Festival parade, a tea at the Community Art Center and a community book reading at the Switzerland County Public Library.

Local men have joined “Brothers of the Brush” with ladies signed up as “Bicentennial Belles.” All wear ribbons and earn buttons to signify their participation at each Bicentennial mini event. Several of “Brothers” have been growing beards to mark the occasion (as men folk did during the 1963 Vevay-Switzerland County’s Sesquicentennial) with “Belles” wearing specific items during themed events.

There is so much going on during the Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial that a website went live earlier this year listing current and upcoming events with times and locations. Log on to http://vevaybicentennial.org for schedules and to view historic photos of the area.

Bicentennial merchandise is also on sale at the Switzerland County Visitors Center including, tee-shirts, tote bags, wine glasses, coloring books with sketches by artist

A limited edition bronze medallion was created by Indiana Artisan Donna Weaver for the Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial.
An encore presentation of “The Stripping Room,” a play about stripping tobacco will be shown at the Historic Hoosier Theater beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 4. Written by local playwright Libby Kinman, the performance is geared towards mature audiences. The theater is located on 209 Ferry Street in downtown Vevay. Admission is $10.

An old-fashioned tent “Chautauqua” will take place at the Switzerland County Historical Museum grounds at 208 East Market Street at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. Known as an outlet for guest speakers to talk on social and political issues, Vevay will once again hold a Chautauqua in celebration of the Bicentennial.

William Jennings Bryan, one of Vevay’s most popular Chautauqua speakers of 1917, will make a return visit this year. Period performances of music, dance and comedic relief will also take center stage. Guests are invited in dress in appropriate attire of the 1900s and mingle at a tea following the performances. Admission is free and open to the public.

Donning vintage uniforms, the troupe plays in an open field using circa 1869 rules and no ball gloves.

“One…two…..no, just one two-headed eagle guarding the cathedral,” my friend said, shielding her eyes from the sun and gazing up at the towering Scottish Rite Cathedral above us.

My other friend wrote the number down on our packet of papers and said, “Ok, so now it’s back to the library to find some giant jacks.”

You might be thinking, “where on Earth were these people?” The answer is, in our very own downtown Indianapolis.

This past Saturday, three of my best friends and I went downtown and took part in what is called UrbanQuest. UrbanQuest is basically a scavenger hunt in a city. After signing up online for the Indianapolis quest, I received a clue packet that we followed until we had our final clue. Then we typed in our final solution on UrbanQuest’s website and unlocked our final destination, a restaurant for lunch where UrbanQuest had made reservations for four under my name. A modern day adventure to be solved!

But the food and the destination were only half the fun. The two hours that we spent gallivanting around the city helped me, a girl from a small town in Ohio, learn the downtown better and look closer at downtown sites that I had previously only driven by.

We began our quest at the Federal Courthouse and took a closer look at the statues of the women surrounding it and what they meant. Then, we walked past Christ Church Cathedral and all around Monument Circle, taking particular time to notice statues and details as instructed by our clue packet. From Monument Circle we went to the courthouse, down New York Street to see the Musicians’ Mural, to Depew Memorial Fountain, to the World War Memorial, to the memorials in front of Indianapolis Public Library, to the Scottish Rite Cathedral and lastly, to our secret restaurant destination of Barcelona Tapas.

By having to solve clues and take a closer look at places we thought we already knew, my friends and I saw downtown Indianapolis in a whole new light. It encouraged us to take a closer look at the Indianapolis we thought we knew. When we looked we found a rich history and beautiful sites and that we had previously taken for granted. The fountains held so much romance. The memorials held respect, appreciation, and love. The murals, memorials, and every building we saw held history. The mural showed the jazz music influence in Indianapolis. At the courthouse we learned that Lincoln’s funeral train stopped there and that up 50,000 people came to see his open casket. The history went on and on.

We laughed and joked and had fun through the majority of the quest, but definitely experienced moments of serious sobriety at war memorials and other sites where we usually wouldn’t read all the inscriptions. However, the moments of happiness and pensiveness balanced out to experiencing Indianapolis, that we thought we knew, with fresh eyes and seeing it for the bright, rich, historical city that it is.

If you aren’t from the Indianapolis area UrbanQuest is a great family friendly way to experience the area. If you are from Indianapolis it’s a great way to see your city from a new angle.

Needless to say though, with all that walking, by the time we got to Barcelona Tapas we were ravenous. And boy, did they deliver. Tapas, for those who have never tried it, are small plates made for sharing. For example, when we ordered the meatball dish we got four meatballs so each of us got one. Tapas are perfect for sharing and trying a little of a lot of dishes. We ordered a plethora of delicious small plates that have me craving to go back less than a week later. We began with warm meatballs in tomato sauce, fried artichoke heart bites with lemon aioli, chicken and chorizo skewers, and tortilla española. One of my favorites was the goat cheese in a tomato sauce that was so creamy it melted in your mouth and spread as easily as the sauce across the bread pieces they provided. Finally, we finished with the grand finale of Tres Leche cake. The cake was light and fluffy topped with a perfectly sweet whipped cream and surrounded by a cream sauce that the cake soaked up to add flavor to each and every bite.

So next time you’re in downtown, whether you quest or not, take a moment to look at it with fresh eyes and see the history and culture of the place we call home. And then head straight to Barcelona Tapas for a cultural experience that your taste buds will thank you for.

One of the many reasons that I love Indianapolis so much is the large amount of beautiful parks, bike paths and running routes. The city is extremely outdoor friendly, offering an escape from the bustling everyday city lifestyle. Downtown Indianapolis has a pictueresque walkway along the canal that just happens to be my favorite place to explore the city.

The canal was originally dug in the 1800s. It has since been refurbished and updated in the past few years. It has great views of the city skyline and is often a spot for wedding pictures because the backdrop is so gorgeous. There are always people jogging, biking or catching up with friends. If interested, you can rent paddle boats, bikes or take a gondola ride. As you might have already guessed, the canal is a great location for date night.

While the canal itself is something to do, there are plenty of activities along the water that will keep you busy for days. The NCAA Headquarter is a great place to explore the hall of champions. There are two museums along the walkways of the canal: the Indiana State Museum and Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art.

For those who love animals, the Indianapolis Zoo is a must see in the city. It is a wonderful place to explore and play all year. Want to take in a baseball game in July? Then head over to Victory Field and watch some minor league baseball.

The canal offers endless amounts of fun. From relaxing gondola rides to educational museums to roaring animals and homeruns, there is something for everyone in every season.

Now is your chance to explore it for yourself! Begin at the Richmond Welcome Center to pick up your Enchanted Fairy Trail bag, create a fairy halo, participate in the fairy costume contest and enjoy delicious fairy themed snacks. Then, grab your map of the over 20 locations and (for this special event) each location will have various fairy themed activities for children to participate in including face painting, fairy dust tattoos, fairy themed crafts, snacks, games and fairy necklaces.

Indiana turns 200 in a couple years, but do you know what turns 200 before that?

Vevay, Indiana.

They turn 200 this year, in October.

A year later, Switzerland County (of which Vevay is the county seat) turns 200 too.

Two years before Indiana does.

But just like your cheap aunt and uncle who celebrated Christmas and your birthday with a single present because the days were “only four months apart,” Vevay and Switzerland County are celebrating their joint bicentennial from October 4 – 13, 2013.

Vevay is the birthplace of the first successful commercial winery in the United States, and it’s also where the Mormon hay press was invented. And it’s the home of the annual Swiss Wine Festival, whose celebrity grape stomp I won in 2011, keeping the crown in Indiana for one more year (take THAT, Kentucky and Ohio!).

According to a press release, Vevay-Switzerland County will host several bicentennial-themed activities, such as the YMCA Larry Tolbert 5K Run/Walk on October 5th, a Vintage Base Ball Game on October 6th between the Vevay White Stockings facing down the Rising Sun River Belles (you can tell it’s vintage because they spell it “base ball.”), and the Edelweiss Singers & Character Drama of County’s Past at the Hoosier Theater on October 10th.

The Edelweiss Singers are a newly resurrected group from the Sesquicentennial (150 years), although I don’t know if any of the Sesqui singers are joining this new group.

Several local men have also joined the “Brothers of the Brush,” and women are serving as “Bicentennial Belles.” They’re all wearing buttons and ribbons to show that they’re participating in different events. Also several of the Brothers are growing beards to commemorate the 200th anniversary. I also think that even though Vevay and Switzerland are celebrating the bicentennial together, the Bearded Ones should continue growing theirs until the actual Switzerland County bicentennial. With bonus points if they keep going until Indiana’s celebration.

You can see everything that’s going on, plus read about Vevay and Switzerland County’s history at their new website VevayBicentennial.org. There are even several historic photos of the area.

Mr. Darcy (Brian Cushing), Jeni Scudder and Andrea Kappas at Community Art Center of Switzerland County.

A few other notable events include:

Vevay Main Street will host their monthly First Friday event themed “Patchwork of History” on Friday, October 4 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

An encore presentation of “The Stripping Room,” a play about stripping tobacco will be shown at the Historic Hoosier Theater beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 4. Written by local playwright Libby Kinman, the performance is geared towards mature audiences. Admission is $10.

An old-fashioned tent “Chautauqua” will take place at the Switzerland County Historical Museum grounds at 208 East Market Street at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.

William Jennings Bryan, one of Vevay’s most popular Chautauqua speakers of 1917, will make a return visit this year. Period performances of music, dance and comedic relief will also take center stage. Admission is free.

Honoring Switzerland County’s rural heritage, the “Rural Heritage Tour” will take place at Musee de Venoge; the Thiebaud Farmstead; and Garland Farm on Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 12 from noon until 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Tickets are available for $11 for an ox dinner to be served at Musee de Venoge. Dessert will follow down the river at the Thiebaud Homestead.

Other activities during the Vevay-Switzerland County Bicentennial includes a “Cast Iron Chef” contest, antique tractor show, cake decorating contest, tobacco stripping contest, Bicentennial art tour, and more.

Congratulations, Vevay and Switzerland County, and happy birthday to you both! Make Ohio County take you out for a nice dinner or something.

A city boasting intimate music venues isn’t something that rolls off the tongue when recommending Indianapolis to travelers. Quite frankly, Indianapolis isn’t even on the radar for many concertgoers when it comes to live music. Sure, downtown caters to large shows at Old National Centre, but what’s out there for someone looking for an alternative spin on live music? Well, hop on I-65, take the exit for Fountain Square and head towards the Murphy Arts Center. Tucked away on the second floor is the Do317 Lounge, a cozy space with the feel of a living room…a living room with a fully stocked bar and a stage ready to give an audience and up close and personal show, that is.

Built to hold a maximum of 119 people, you’re sure to get one of the best shows in Indianapolis when it comes to anything from indie rock to bluegrass. Aimed to provide a space for not only bands booked through the Do317/MOKB Presents concert series, the Lounge is also home to art shows and other private events.

Having had the pleasure of interning for Do317, the creators, hosts and promoters of everything Lounge related, I can personally vouch for the good times, good people and good music the Lounge offers. With a rap sheet including acts like The Lumineers, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Walk the Moon and Family of the Year, the Lounge doesn’t just book acts to fill the stage; they give concertgoers what they want. If you’re looking for deafening audio and guitar riffs that shake the foundation, the Lounge simply isn’t for you. Designed to give concertgoers a feel as if the band were playing a private show in their living rooms, the Lounge truly lives up to the feel of Fountain Square.

My favorite thing about the Lounge is the atmosphere. From the second you walk in to your last steps out, nothing else matters but the music. The good vibes you get from the people around you, the great selection of craft beers and IPA’s, not to mention hanging out with the performers post show makes this concert experience like none other. The Do317 Lounge is changing Indianapolis from a pit stop on the map of live music to a number one destination when it comes to anything music related.

Keep a look out! Tickets for shows at the Lounge don’t stick around for long, so buy them now before you’re left behind! Check out the video below for a little taste of what you’ll experience and then head to their full calendar of events here!
