Unique Experience at Crown Hill Cemetery

On Memorial Day my family ventured out to Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis for their 145th Memorial Day Service. The setting was beautiful, the ceremony poignant and the experience memorable. If you haven’t visited Crown Hill, here is a list of reasons why it is worth the trip:

  • Crown Hill was established in 1863 – making it 150 years old. To view a complete list of their history, visit their website.
  • Crown Hill is the third largest cemetery in the United States with 555 acres and plenty of paths to walk and/or bike around.
  • President Benjamin Harrison is buried on the property along with three Vice Presidents, Hoosier Poet James Whitcomb Riley and the infamous bank robber, John Dillinger. (This view is from James Whitcomb Riley’s gravesite.)
  • Public Tours are offered throughout the spring and summer for a small fee.
  • Crown Hill has its own National Cemetery area residing on 1.4 acres. There are 2,135 soldiers buried representing every way the United States has ever participated in.

If you find yourself in Indianapolis and want to learn more about its history, Crown Hill Cemetery is a great place to start.
