Northern Indiana Family Destination

Being from a geographically spread out family, we are always looking for reasonable getaways where we can all meet up, have plenty to do and enjoy each others company. In Northern Indiana we found just that.

I did some research and found accommodations that could fit all 18 of us comfortably - DunesWalk Inn at Furness Mansion. (Since there were so many of us, we rented out the entire home, but you can rent out portions depending on how big your party size is.) It was close to the Dunes, close to the outlets and had a HUGE yard where the kids could play. And trust me, with eight little ones that was a huge advantage!

Even though the weather was not cooperative that weekend, we still made great use of our time and visited Mount Baldy.

Mount Baldy is the largest “living” dune in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore at roughly 125 feet tall. I’m not going to lie … it was a hike. The smallest ones definitely needed help getting to the top, but certainly not going down!

No one attempted to get in the water that day…probably would have froze! Hopefully on our next trip, the sun will be out and we can enjoy the beach for a little while longer. If you do make a trip up north, there are SEVERAL places to access the Dunes. Indiana Dunes Tourism will help you to determine which one is best for you. We chose Mt. Baldy because of its location to where we were staying and it offers free parking and admission. It is still part of the National Lakeshore … and the day we were there they were giving out badges to kids for experiencing nature and answering some questions about the dunes. Here they are getting “sworn” in!

After successfully wearing all of the children out, the grandparents were on duty while we went to Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets! Perfect ending to the day!

While we packed most of our food for the weekend, we did enjoy eating out one night and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Popolano’s. Reasonable prices and very kid-friendly!
