So begins the time each year when I begin to brainstorm ways to get my kids and I out of the house, yet also out of these frigid temperatures. It can be difficult to find places where kids can be kids, and adults feel comfortable letting them play. And thus our favorite winter day trip: children’s museums.
If you know anything about Indiana and kids, then you already know Indianapolis is home to the world’s largest and greatest children’s museum. But there are several other smaller museums focused on kids scattered around the state (like kidscommons, here in Columbus where I call home, or WonderLab in Bloomington). Perfect outings when you just want to get out for a few hours.
My goal is to visit all the children’s museums around the state before my boys outgrow this phase in life. This winter, I’d love to get to the Muncie Children’s Museum. The museum has existed for more than 35 years and emphasizes creating an atmosphere of inquisitive play and curiosity. Perfect for young minds to expand their knowledge and have fun at the same time. And at 24,000 square feet, that’s lots of room to move around, especially when kids have been cooped up all winter.
I should probably time my visit in conjunction with the Princess and Pirate Party on February 16. Visitors are encouraged to come in costume and join the fun from 10-11 a.m. Cost is $10 for museum members, $15 for non-members.
General admission to the museum, which is open Tuesday-Sunday each week, is $6 per person. But there are many deals and coupons listed here, like half-price Sundays on the second Sunday of each month.
