Elkhart’s Celebrate the Arts

One of the top items on my Indiana bucket list is the quilt gardens in Amish Country in northern Indiana. I’ve heard that they are so beautiful, and for someone who loves flowers as much as I do, I’m sure they will not disappoint when I’m finally able to venture up there.

Now is a perfect time to head toward Elkhart, Indiana. Elkhart’s Celebrate the Arts event will be in full swing beginning tomorrow and running through September 29. For the first time, more than 7,000 mums in every fall color imaginable will be on display, in fact they’ll fill an entire city block, along the Riverwalk between Franklin and High Streets in downtown Elkhart. It’s called a “Flower Carpet” and there will be an accessible ramp to ensure good views of the display. Plus, the flowers will be illuminated at night to further enhance the beauty of what I’m sure is an incredible scene.

There are also several concerts and shows scheduled in conjunction with the event. Everything from a Cole Porter-inspired symphony performance to an REO Speedwagon concert. I’d personally put the “Home and Habitat” show on September 26 on my calendar. Indiana natives Carrie Newcomer and Philip Gulley will combine for a night of story and song. These shows will take place in the newly restored Lerner Theater, which you can tour.

Your bound to get hungry taking in all these fun activities, so consider heading to one of the 18 participating restaurants in Elkhart Dining Days. From September 24 to October 6, these restaurants will offer a 3-course dinner for two for $25, with $2 of each meal benefiting Church Community Services.

And if the amazing sight of 7,000 mums inspires you to add some beauty to your yard, then you can buy a mum and support local charities.
