Remember the Super 46 sandwich competition that was featured here on the Indiana Insider as part of the Super Bowl hoopla back in January? In case you missed it, voters from all over Indiana selected some of their very favorite sandwiches from around Indiana.
One of the Elite Eight finalists was a hamburger from Hinkle’s Sandwich Shop in Madison, Indiana. So when I was planning a weekend camping trip to Clifty Falls (more on that to come here at the Indiana Insider!), I knew trying out one of these highly acclaimed burgers had to be on my list of things to do.
I should have known the voters of Indiana could be trusted. This really was a great hamburger. The burgers are small (bigger than a slider from White Castle, but smaller than a hamburger from McDonald’s), but what they lack in size they make up for in taste. Order them up just like the locals do, with pickles and onions.
And while most people seemed to be ordering carryout from the small restaurant, my family dined outside at one of the few tables along Main Street. We got to enjoy the beautiful ambience of this quaint Indiana river town while getting our grub on. Hinkle’s has been around since 1933, so we felt like we were pairing up a unique dining experience with a cultural and historic institution. Plus, who doesn’t love getting their hands around a tasty greasy burger!
Thanks for the recommendation, Indiana sandwich lovers! And if you haven’t been down that way, put Hinkle’s on your list.
