I’ve been checking the weather forecast for this weekend each day. I have grand plans of hitting the hiking trail with my family to really get the spring season in full swing. I’m particularly excited because a few months ago, I stumbled upon the website for the Sycamore Land Trust and discovered a whole new-to-me collection of great hiking trails scattered around southern Indiana.
Sycamore Land Trust is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve land in order to maintain the natural heritage of southern Indiana. They even help people conserve private property. Not every piece of land that is protected by the Trust is open and accessible to the public, but the public properties are listed here. These preserves are exclusively for hiking and general enjoyment of nature, so leave your camping gear, firewood, etc., at home.
On one of those unseasonably warm winter days we had a few months ago, we tackled Tangeman Woods, a trail on the west side of Columbus, Indiana. You can read more about the trail and get directions here. We hope to visit the Touch the Earth trail (also in Columbus) this weekend.
A hike at one of their properties is almost guaranteed enjoyment. You can avoid the crowds that sometimes gather (especially on popular weekends) at more well known parks, and really connect with the natural environment. The trail difficulties vary, so be sure to check out the website and plan according to your preferences and abilities.
If you’re looking to connect with other nature lovers and help the Sycamore Land Trust’s mission, be sure to check out their Events page. They frequently organize group hikes, trail maintenance gatherings, eduational workshops, and other activities. For instance, tomorrow (April 27) you can go on a group hike at the Beanblossom Bottoms Nature Preserve at 7 p.m. and on Sunday (April 29), you could bring the kids to a photo workshop at Yellowwood Farm at 1 p.m.
More information is available at the Sycamore Land Trust website or by calling 812.336.5382. And please leave a comment with some of your favorite Indiana hiking trails!
