It’s quite probably one of the most humble contenders in the Super46 Sandwich Playoff, but don’t dismiss the Take You Back PB&J served up at Hoaglin To Go & Marketplace in the Mass Ave district of downtown Indianapolis.

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is one of my favorite comfort foods. I like mine toasted with crunchy peanut butter and either grape, strawberry or raspberry jelly. I must not be alone because that’s pretty close to how the good folks at Hoaglin make their PB&J. If you’re not so adventurous, you can get it simply made with creamy peanut butter and strawberry preserves on whole wheat bread. Or you can step up the sophistication a bit by adding chopped roasted peanuts and fresh sliced strawberries.

When I tried the sandwich recently, I ordered it toasted on whole wheat bread, although the server did offer me a choice of sourdough bread. They served it with chips on the side, just like my mom used to. I bet if I’d asked, they would have even cut the crust off the bread. Because the day I visited Hoaglin’s was cold and rainy, I opted for a hot chocolate instead of the requisite glass of milk. It was perfect.
It may not be the most sophisticated sandwich you’ve ever eaten, but Hoaglin’s Take-You-Back PB&J will do just that and with one bite transport you back to a time when your biggest worry was what kind of jelly to choose.
