Downtown Indianapolis: Cold is the new Hot.

Struggling to embrace the cooler months ahead? Well, don’t let cabin fever keep you from enjoying all the indoor and outdoor activities downtown has to offer! Despite the cold weather, downtown’s a hot commodity. Here are a few reasons we think you should spend sweater weather downtown.

Soup’s On! – Old Man Winter’s one redeeming quality is giving us an excuse to eat soup all the time! What better place to drink your lunch than Circle City Soups? Try seasonal favorites like Brussels sprouts bisque, curried carrot and Bayou black bean. Warm up to the kosher comfort foods of Shapiro’s Delicatessen and classics like Matzo Ball soup. After a visit to the Indiana State Museum, visit the L.S. Ayres Tea Room located inside the museum for their legendary chicken velvet soup.

A butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker – Awake from hibernation to forage at the Indianapolis Winter Farmer’s Market on Saturdays in their new nest – the west wing of Indianapolis City Market. Yes. “Fresh” and “local” are still doable in Hoosier winter months.  Think hydroponic lettuces, cellared apples and lean bison meat. While at the Market, be sure to grab breakfast/brunch/lunch at one of City Market’s numerous vendors. What better reason to bundle up and spend your Saturday morning?

Walking in a Winter Wonderland – Ever wonder what it’s like to walk down Candyland Lane? Close your eyes and imagine… strolling along Mass Ave. An avenue illuminated by a path of trees filled with blue-and-white LED twinkle lights await.  Cap off your walk with a hot chocolate from The Best Chocolate in Town or The South Bend Chocolate Company – with options like Mexican, dark and white chocolate, they make loving plain old cocoa…plain. For a little extra warmth, spice it up a notch with a spiked hot chocolate from MacNiven’s Restaurant & Bar.

Don’t sweat it – News alert! Bikes and trails don’t stop working because it’s cold out!  Bundle up with winter biking gear from Bicycle Garage Indy and hit the Indianapolis Cultural Trail for 7.5 miles of easy access to attractions and Cultural Districts. Grab a thermos, pack a hot picnic and head to one of the great outdoor spaces including Central Canal, Georgia Street, Monument Circle and the American Legion Mall. If outdoor exercise isn’t your cup of tea, there are also several fitness facilities including two YMCAs and over ten fitness facilities. Mix it up with yoga at Invoke Studio or ice skating at Indiana/World Skating Academy. For more downtown fitness resources visit our site.

Suit up for Downtown’s sports – Yearning for hot sports action? Hoot and holler to your heart’s content for the Indianapolis Colts! Enjoy the total game experience with Colts tailgating before each match at various downtown locations. Ready for an Ice-packed season? Puck around with the Indiana Ice all season long!
