New Restaurants, Fun Events Coming to The Commons

When I last wrote about The Commons, the new, multi-million dollar community and recreation center in downtown Columbus, Indiana, it was still under construction and had not yet opened to the public. I’m happy to report that The Commons, which opened in May, is now a thriving and bustling part of life in Columbus.

The indoor playground has been heavily utilized, including by my own family. Many performances of all types have taken place in the concert space. And countless nonprofit and community groups have used meeting space in the building.

The patio at Scotty’s Burger Joint begins to take shape.

Several exciting things are on the horizon at The Commons. Two Indianapolis-based restaurants are coming to town: Scotty’s Brewhouse and Puccini’s. Restaurant owner Scott Wise will bring Scotty’s Burger Joint to The Commons, expected to open in late  October/early November. The menu looks fantastic, with lots of drink specials (which could be enjoyed on the big patio just outside the Commons building). Many of the ingredients are organic and local. Puccini’s also has plans to open soon. Famous for its unique pizza combinations, Puccini’s also features gluten-free food options.

Also in November is the Deja Vu Fine Art and Craft Show. Scheduled for November 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at the Commons, it features artists who specialize in repurposing “junk” into fine art and other products. For example, one artist takes copper roof flashing and turns it into beautiful jewelry. Another creates tote bags out of highway billboards. Nearly 50 artists from Indiana and Kentucky will exhibit and sell their wares at the show.

As you can see, the momentum from The Commons’ opening this spring hasn’t lost any steam as we move further in fall. If you haven’t visited this great, family-friendly spot, be sure to add it to your fall or winter itinerary. It’s a great place to let the kids play indoors, grab some delicious food, or catch a show. An event calendar is available here.
