Dig-IN to Indiana’s Best Local Food This August

This summer, I’ve made it a goal to use more locally grown food when I cook at home. I subscribe to a CSA box from Double Oak Farm here in Columbus, Indiana and I visit farmer’s markets regularly. We grow some darn good food around the state, I’m proud to report!

I recently had the chance to tour the Wishard Slow Food Garden at White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis. This is a real agricultural gem right in the heart of a big city. I was inspired by what Growing Places Indy (a nonprofit responsible for the garden) is doing to make us all more aware of what we’re eating and where it comes from. Here you’ll see tons of varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs, with museums, zoos, and public art as their neighbors. All the produce is earmarked for a specific purpose in the community (like Duos, a popular food truck, and the Original Farmers Market at City Market in Indianapolis).

The celebration of local food continues at White River State Park with a great event called Dig-IN scheduled for August 28 from noon to 5 p.m. During the event, 30 of the best chefs from around the state will prepare dishes featuring locally grown produce, meat and dairy. Guests can taste the dishes, watch cooking demonstrations and hear directly from the chefs about their recipes.

All that eating might make you thirsty. Luckily, there will also be wine from eight Indiana wineries, beer from 10 Indiana breweries, local iced coffee and juice.

Tickets are $20 in advance at select Marsh Supermarkets and MainStreet stores or $30 at the door. This includes samples of food and drink, along with live music, gardening exhibits, and access to all the experts. Children 5-15 are $7 and under 5 are free. The event will take place in White River State Park’s Celebration Plaza, 801 W. Washington Street.

For more information, including a list of participating chefs, visit DigINdiana.org or call 317.607.8715.

If you’d like to know more about the Wishard Slow Food Garden at White River State Park, plan to attend a workshop scheduled for each Wednesday evening in the summer from 4-6 p.m. at the garden (in front of the Eiteljorg Museum and the Indiana State Museum).
