Several years ago, my husband was in graduate school full-time at Indiana University in Bloomington while I was still living and working in Indianapolis. While this distance and schedule conflict was challenging at times, the highlight was the chance to make the beautiful drive from Indianapolis to Bloomington south on 37 often. I learned to appreciate this time in the car, admiring the rolling hills and beautiful countryside as it passed by, and enjoyed the chance to breath deeply and press pause for an hour or so. (And take your time: anyone who has made this drive will warn you to obey the speed limit or pay the price.)
One of the best places to stop along the away and stretch your legs is Oliver Winery. Free tastings are offered daily and free production tours are offered on the weekends. This winery offers great variety, everything from dry reds to sweet dessert wines. My favorite way to visit is to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful grounds while sipping on their delicious wine. The Winery also sells gourmet picnic supplies. There are many events taking place at the winery throughout the summer: a complete schedule is available here.
Olivery Winery is located at 8024 N. State Road 37 in Bloomington. The tasting room is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Weekend tours are offered every half hour from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
