The ready availability of digital cameras has churned out hundreds of Hoosiers who call themselves photographers. But Bloomington-based photographer John Bower is an old school shutterbug. He uses a medium format-film camera, develops his film and hand-processes gelatin-silver prints in his own darkroom. Together, with his wife Lynn, John produces fine art photography books and prints under the name Studio Indiana.
Studio Indiana aims to create exceptional photography books featuring the state’s fascinating, yet rapidly disappearing, cultural heritage. To date, the Bowers have published seven books that document nearly lost and almost forgotten pieces of Indiana’s historical landscape. New for 2010 is The Common Good, with a forward by former Indiana Congressman Lee Hamilton, that highlights abandoned and virtually discarded schools, hospitals, churches and other buildings that once served the people of the state.
