Columbus: Unforgettable Getaway

Last week I visited Columbus to tour the town and see its top attractions. This is the third post in a three-post series about my trip.

On my trip to Columbus, I expected architecture to be the focal point of the town-and it was. Yet I also discovered that Columbus is a great destination for two. A couple can retreat into the small-town haven while experiencing romantic lodging and attractions that rival big cities.

Cozy up in a luxurious suite in The Inn at Irwin Gardens. This 1864 mansion absolutely stunned me with its beauty and historic elegance. Ornate woodwork, original furniture and the overall grandeur give the inn an air of romance. Each suite has a private bathroom and the W.G. Irwin Bachelor’s Suite includes a round shower with an oculus above it to let in the natural light. I have never seen anything like it!

The sweeping veranda and breathtaking gardens adorned with flowers and fountains complete the enchanting setting. A visitor here will feast on Belgian waffles, homemade bagels and quiche in the mornings and will have free run of the gardens, parlors and library. It was obvious to me during my tour that the inn is a great place for relaxation, reconnection and romance.

One Body One Soul Spa

Refresh yourself just outside the Irwin Gardens at One Body One Soul Spa, housed in a quaint historic cottage. Take a yoga or pilates class to exercise both body and spirit or enjoy a facial or massage with your significant other. Just walking through the cottage made me want to come back for a day of relaxation.

Columbus is a naturally beautiful town and you can take in the environment with a round of golf at Otter Creek Golf Course, voted one of the best public courses in the nation. Designed by Robert Trent Jones and Rees Jones, it features 27 holes among rolling hills and exquisite landscape. Guests of the Inn at Irwin Gardens receive a discount on their game!

Have a shopping bonanza in Edinburgh, just outside Columbus. Exit 76 Antique Mall awaits with 76,000 square feet of treasures under one roof. The customer service team will help you navigate the 600 booths and lighted cases until you find that perfect piece of furniture or decor. Coin lovers will want to browse through the extensive Coin Collector’s Row for hours. Stop at the Edinburgh Premium Outlets nearby to find great deals on brands from Nike and Champion to Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein and J.Crew.

In the evening, explore the town hand-in-hand and eat at a gourmet restaurant. Settle in for a show at the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, which will amaze you with its level of talent and sophistication. This season’s lineup includes sax music, a Christmas show, movie themes and Mozart’s Requiem.

Columbus is a beautiful and welcoming town with opportunities for culture, family fun and romance. Let the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau help you plan your getaway.
