Indiana 500 Tour

Racing and Indiana are as synonymous as the Colts and victory. Yet Indiana’s automotive heritage includes more than the upcoming Indianapolis 500. The new Indiana 500 Tour lets you explore Indiana’s transportation and motorsports history by traveling 500 miles and visiting 120 landmark sites throughout Indiana.

The tour is a fun and affordable vacation idea for anyone who enjoys road trips, racing, automobiles, museums, history, relaxing destinations or unique restaurants. Travelers can make the trip their own by choosing which sights to visit along the trail. This year’s route winds through north and central Indiana, where most of Indiana’s transportation heritage was born.

In the northern part of Indiana, visitors can stop at the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend to see vehicles dating back to the early 1900s. For a change of pace, take a horse-drawn buggy ride in Shipshewana or pull into Depot of Kouts for some delicious ice cream and a railroad atmosphere.

In western Indiana, you can enjoy a movie at Monticello’s Lake Shore Drive-In Theatre or walk through an original 1928 Standard Oil Service Station at the Red Crown Mini-Museum in Lafayette. Grab a delicious burger at West Lafayette’s Triple XXX Family Restaurant, Indiana’s first curb service restaurant.

From Lafayette, head east to see the stretch of road in Kokomo where Elwood Haynes drove America’s First Car on its maiden run. Further east, auto enthusiasts can visit Centerville’s Model T Ford Museum to discover Fords from 1908 and later.

No road trip would be complete without visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame Museum in the central part of the state. Walk down Gasoline Alley, hear the history of the speedway and take a ride around the track.

In addition to route information, Indiana500Tour.com updates you on automotive festivals and car shows taking place around the state, so you can plan a trip around your favorite events.

A new tour and theme will be featured each year, with previous trip suggestions remaining on the Indiana500Tour website. Enjoy a relaxing vacation through the heart of Indiana by taking a 500 Tour.  Restart your driving engines!
