Day One

Explore one of the region’s most popular outdoor adventure destinations, Clifty Falls State Park, located one mile west of Madison, where hiking is the number one thing to do. Ten trails canvas the park and run through canyons and creek beds. Trails range from an easy .5 mile to very rugged 7.5 miles.

Schedule a trail ride at Shilo Farms in Canaan, just north of Madison. Not the usual group nose-to-tail ride, Owners Rod and Jenny Asher make each ride a unique experience. Tally-ho and off you go! Several trails are available and wind through deep forested areas, shallow rocky creek beds and meadows. The rides are exhilarating, the terrain is gorgeous and novice or experienced riders will enjoy the day.

Overnight in Clifty Falls State Park at the Clifty Inn & the Falls Restaurant for superior lodging, down home cooking, state of the art indoor pool/spa and warm hospitality. The views from the Inn are breath-taking!

Dine in the historic district at one of Madison’s many fine eateries, stroll along the riverfront and grab a night cap before bed.

Day Two

Enjoy breakfast in the Falls Restaurant, then head to the Madison’s Heritage Trail. It stretches 1.4 miles from Madison State Hospital overlooking downtown Madison (corner of Vernon and Vaughn Streets) through town to the riverfront. Discover dramatic views, historical landmarks and natural wonders along the way.

Downtown Madison offers a wide variety of specialty shops including The Bird House. Stock up on backyard birding supplies and learn about how to build a backyard nature sanctuary.

Grab lunch at one of Madison’s downtown eateries before heading north to Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Big Oaks offers a variety of recreational activities. The area is designated as a “Globally Important Bird Area”, so the best way to enjoy it is from behind a camera.

Just east of Madison near Vevay is Dagaz Acres Zipline Adventure Center. Soar high above the tree lines and experience the rugged wilderness from a bird’s-eye view. Soak in the stunning views while safely secured in a comfortable harness. The adventure begins with a quick climb to the treetops and continues over scenic valleys and ravines.
