For the football-averse crowd on New Year’s Day

I love New Year’s Day. Every year my parents come over to watch football and eat cabbage rolls (for good luck, my dad says). In my mind it’s the last lazy day of the holiday season. But not everyone likes lounging in front of the TV, watching hours of football. If that’s you, then I’d suggest you check out the 2010 Heartland Mini Film Festival.

Scheduled from 6-9pm on Friday, January 1, the film festival begins late enough to allow you to recover from any late night New Year’s Eve celebrations. Films include Heartland Crystal Heart Award and Official Selection shorts from recent Heartland Film Festivals as well as two featured screenings of 2009 Crystal Heart Award-winning film, Jitensha (Bicycle) followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Paul Nethercott.

My top picks of the evening, based on the synopses provided here, are Wednesday, Slow, and Paul and his Wall.

All screenings will be shown at the Harrison Center for the Arts, Gallery #2, located at 1505 N. Delaware Street in Indianapolis. The 2010 Heartland Mini Film Festival is free and open to the public. Free culture? Now that’s a great way to kick off the New Year!
