Cypress Sunset in Indiana by Bernie Kasper

Cypress Sunset in Indiana (Muscatatuck NWR) by Bernie Kasper

Located just minutes east of Seymour, Muscatatuck National Wildlife Reserve (map) is a beautiful place to get away. Whether you love to fish, hunt, hike or just enjoy some wildlife-viewing, Muscatatuck has what you’re looking for.

You can visit Muscatatuck NWR 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset (except during the refuge deer season–6 am to 6 pm) and there is NO admission charge. That’s right, you can simply drop by the NWR and spend your entire day there without having to spend a penny.

If you want more information about things to do at Muscatatuck, you can drop by the Refuge headquarters Monday-Friday from 8 am – 4:30 pm or the information desk and bookstore, staffed by a volunteer every afternoon.

From the Muscatatuck NWR website:

Muscatatuck’s mission is simple: to restore, preserve, and manage a mix of forest, wetland, and grassland habitat for fish, wildlife, and people. Special management emphasis is given to waterfowl, other migratory birds, and endangered species.

Nine miles of refuge roads that are open sunrise to sunset seven days/week attract approximately 185,000 visitors to the refuge each year. Wildlife-viewing opportunities are excellent at Muscatatuck, and the refuge is known as an exceptionally fine bird watching site.
