challenger_logoWhere were you 40 years ago July 20?

Well, I was just a twinkle in my parents’ eye, but I’m sure that my parents were watching with great interest the news about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing on the moon.  This July 20, however, I will be taking part in the celebration marking the event at the Challenger Learning Center in Brownsburg, Indiana.

Brownsburg’s Challenger Learning Center is one of 52 across the country established to honor the space shuttle crew that died on January 28, 1986 in the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion. The Center offers simulated space missions, distance learning programs, teacher training, professional development, enrichment programs and corporate missions.

On July 20, from 6pm to 10pm, The Center will host a free public open house to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the First Moon Landing. Activities include:

  • Mini simulated “Return to the Moon” missions for anyone 5th grade and older (pre-register at 317.852.1008 or by e-mailing challengerlearningcenter@brownsburg.k12.in.us)
  • 7pm videoconference presentation “NASA’s Near Misses” by NASA engineer Tom Benson
  • “Outreach to Space,” a hands-on exhibit courtesy of Science Central in Fort Wayne
  • Tours of the Brownsburg Challenger Learning Center
  • Star Lab constellation program
  • Stargazing with members of the Indiana Astronomical Society

There will be a new TV show that’s going to sow us the Secrets of the Moon Landings. Can’t wait for it.
