My wife and I had the pleasure to visit Elkhart county for a romantic weekend a few weeks ago. This is the second post in a five post series about our adventure in Elkhart County.
The Heritage Driving tour took us to this hidden gem, something I had no idea existed until the audio tour told us to turn right and there it was.
The Bonneyville Mill was founded in 1832 and is still a working flour mill, completely powered by the water running underneath it. It’s the original green technology and still works to this day!
The building is beautiful, old and simply amazing. The tour guide there was kind enough to actually turn the mill on for us and show us how the place worked. To hear the old gears and millstones creak into life is something I will never forget.
The whole building rumbled to life as the raw power of the water began driving the millstones. They still make flour and it’s for sale in the little shop. We were sure to pick up a bag of flour (only cost $3.50). I can’t wait to bake some cookies with it. The flour is organic, unbleached and much better than anything you can buy in the store.
The grounds of the mill are beautiful as well with manicured gardens and pathways that wind along the river that powers the mill. We’ll definitely make a trip to the Bonneyville Mill again!
The Bonneyville Mill is open Wednesday through Sunday: 10 AM to 5 PM from May to October. Visiting the Mill and getting a tour is free. You can read more information on the website here.
