I’m certainly no expert on sand dunes, bogs or wetlands but I was thoroughly impressed with the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore during my family’s recent visit there.
The place is literally a botanical melting pot that was apparently sculpted by a wave of massive slow-moving glacial sheets.
Okay, I’m no expert on glaciers either but that’s what I’ve read.
The area now hosts more than 1,400 different plant species and ferns, including 90 that are threatened or endangered, as well as more than 350 species of birds.
The dunes area runs from Gary, IN to Michigan City, IN and is approximately 50 miles southeast of Chicago.
Beaches? Clean and several of them to choose from.
Sand Dunes? Plentiful, including Mount Baldy which is more than 120 feet high.
Historical Sites? Check out the 19th century Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm.
Dining? The city of Chesterton is home to a seasonal European Market but a variety of traditional and non-traditional eateries are nearby.
Culture? Visit art galleries and enjoy theatrical entertainment in nearby Valparaiso.
Shopping? Approximately 120 stores are located just up the road in Michigan City at Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets Mall.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a wonderful getaway for travelers of all ages. We’ll definitely be going back soon.
