What to ask before buying a cell phone

Ask questions before buying a particular wireless phone and signing up for service:
- Does this model phone provide the latest E911 technology?
- Will this phone provide location-identifying technology?
- If not, when will the carrier begin offering this technology and service?
- How can you avoid accidentally dialing 911?

Understand the risks of relying on a wireless phone when calling 911 for help.
- It doesn't work the same way as dialing 911 from a landline.

Learn how to ensure E911 assistance from a wireless phone - in areas that don't provide E911 service:
- Give the operator the following information:
· Name
· Nature of the Emergency (type of accident, injury, etc.)
· Call Back Number
· Address
· Cross Streets
· Mile Marker
· Highway Exit Number
· Largest/Highest/Most Prominent Landmark

Know the wireless carriers in your county:
- Where do they stand on E911 services?
- Are they meeting FCC regulations for E911?
- If not, why and when will they meet these deadlines?
- Are E911 services available in the areas I live, work and travel?

Give feedback to the Indiana Wireless E911 Board.

Send letters to your wireless carrier demanding that they implement wireless 911-location technology in your area.
