911coverage.org and the American Heart Association
State Treasurer Tim Berry in his role as Chairman of the Indiana Wireless E911 Board, and the American Heart Association have joined forces in a statewide public awareness campaign to inform consumers of the limitations of wireless phones in an emergency when seconds and minutes can mean the difference between life and death.
Indiana is leading the country in the implementation of technology that can locate a caller who is in an emergency; yet, there is still a long way to go.
"Millions of consumers purchase wireless phones for themselves with the expectation of safety and security. Unfortunately, some consumers don't find out about the limitations of their wireless phone until the worst possible time, in an emergency. We must do better than this," declared Berry.
When individuals fall victim to life threatening events like heart attacks and strokes it is important to get emergency help as soon as possible. "Every second does count. Survival is directly linked to the amount of time between the onset of sudden cardiac arrest and defibrillation. Chances of survival are reduced by 7-10 percent with every minute of delay. Few attempts at resuscitation are successful after 10 minutes," added Andy Buroker, past Board Chairman of the American Heart Association Midwest Affiliate.
