Originally opened in 1939 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (part of the New Deal), the Fairgrounds Coliseum has served Indiana proudly and hosted numerous historical events, including the only performances ever held in Indiana by the Beatles.
The Fairgrounds Coliseum is currently undergoing a major renovation, which began on October 29, 2012, and will be out of commission until July 2014, in time for the 158th Indiana State Fair. This is the most important capital improvement project in the 120-year history of the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The scope of the renovation calls for the iconic exterior of the Coliseum to be rejuvenated while the interior will be entirely reconstructed. Planned improvements include a two-level seating bowl, a new video scoreboard, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Based on venue setup options, the new seating capacity will increase to 8,200.
The project's architecture and engineering is being managed by Kansas City-based Populous and the construction management is being overseen by Hunt Construction Group of Indianapolis.
